Time limit put on tax collections

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR
COLUMBUS -- A seven-year statute of limitations would be created within which the state must begin court proceedings to collect most unpaid state taxes, under a bill Gov. Bob Taft has signed into law.
Under the measure, signed into law by Taft on Wednesday, a four-year deadline would be established after an assessment has become final within which the state must start court proceedings to collect unpaid state taxes.
State Rep. Mary Taylor, a Republican from Green, sponsored the new law, which passed the GOP-controlled Legislature earlier this year.
Under previous state law, the state gets three or four years, based on the tax, to issue findings of unpaid taxes.
But there are no laws limiting the time available to bring a case to court.
The law takes effect in about 90 days.
