WARREN -- A 19-year-old city man has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to three counts of rape. Diane Barber, assistant county prosecutor, told Judge John M. Stuard that DeAngelo McCoy of 273 Third St. had sex with an underage girl between summer 2005 and February 2006 at three Warren residences. The girl is now 13. McCoy also will have to register for 10 years as a sexually oriented offender. Public defender Anthony Consoldane said the victim told McCoy she was 16, because she wanted to be with him.
Charged with robbery
BOARDMAN -- Police arrested a Youngstown man and charged him with robbery after he was accused of fighting with a Value City Home Store security guard. The security guard told police that he saw John Bryant, 46, of Roslyn Avenue, take an item and that when he tried to stop him, Bryant shoved him and threw him to the floor. The security guard chased Bryant and police arrested him after stopping a car that Bryant was seen getting into. Bryant was taken to the Mahoning County jail.
Memorial fund
CHAMPION -- The mother of a slain Champion man has set up a memorial fund in his honor. Donations can be made at any branch of Seven Seventeen Credit Union to the "Brandon Fluet Our Hero Memorial Fund," Michelle Dye said. Fluet, 21, of 5325 Alma Ave., was killed outside his home June 20 by a gunshot to the face. His mother said she and a man she was dating were arguing and Fluet intervened, in an attempt to save her life, and was fatally shot. The family set up the fund because they have no insurance, Dye said.
Retired teacher rehired
LORDSTOWN -- The board of education has rehired its first retired teacher under a new contract with the Lordstown Education Association. Jessie Weller, a high school home economics teacher who retired at the end of the school year, was rehired Thursday. She will be paid $47,072, but receive no benefits. Such rehirings can save the district money, officials have said.
Prisoner reports rape
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 42-year-old federal detainee at the private prison on Youngstown-Hubbard Road told police he was raped Wednesday evening by his cellmate, another federal prisoner. The victim was questioned by police at St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was taken for a rape examination. A spokesman for the prison, Northeast Ohio Correctional Center, could not be reached.
Man shot in burglary
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Ferndale Avenue man was shot in both arms during a burglary at his home around 1 a.m. Thursday, police said. Seven 9mm casings found in a spare bedroom were taken as evidence. The man told police he heard noises and was shot when he investigated. He said there were three suspects. Police said the first floor had been ransacked.
Woman robbed at home
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 75-year-old Ivanhoe Avenue woman doing yard work was forced into her house Wednesday afternoon by a man who said he wouldn't hurt her, he just wanted money, reports show. The woman told the intruder where to find her purse. The man then ran to a white van and drove off. The woman ran outside and flagged down a neighbor who called police.
Recycling phone books
WARREN -- The Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District announced a recycling drop-off location for outdated telephone books will be set up at Wal-Mart, 2015 Elm Road N.E. The collection program will run through July 31. District officials remind residents that recycling 1 ton of paper saves 3,700 pounds of lumber, 7,000 gallons of water, 17 trees, and three barrels of oil. Pa. slots update
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- It remains unclear when the state will issue licenses to several slot-machine parlors, but MTR Gaming Group Inc. said they will be ready for business when that happens.
Ted Arneault, chief executive of the Chester, W.Va.-based gambling firm, issued a progress report Wednesday on Presque Isle Downs, at the Summit Township site of his planned racetrack and slots parlor.
The slots portion of the $220 million development could open by November, if MTR gets the slots license by then. Horse racing would begin in September or October of next year, Arneault said.
