Red Cross needs blood for accident-heavy 4th

The American Red Cross says despite concerted efforts to contact and recruit more blood and platelet donors, local blood supplies are projected to reach emergency levels within 24 hours.
The Red Cross is issuing an urgent appeal for people to donate blood and platelets before or during the extended Fourth of July weekend.
"The blood that saves lives is the blood that is available at the time the hospitals need it," said Ben Flossie, regional Red Cross hospital services director. "Unfortunately, accidents traditionally increase over the July 4th holiday. At this time it appears we most likely will not have enough blood and platelets on hand to deliver to local hospitals in a timely manner for scheduled surgeries and accident victims unless people begin donating immediately.
He said this past week supplies have been below minimum inventory standards in five of the eight blood types.
Incentives
To increase awareness of the need for blood and platelet donors, the local Red Cross is offering a summer sweepstakes with a grand prize two-year lease on a 2007 Dodge Dakota 4x2 Club Cab ST from Norris Mega Mall of Lodi.
Six runners-up will each receive a $500 gas card. Those who register to donate blood now through Labor Day are automatically entered. Complete rules are available by visiting www.RedCrossDonor.org or by calling (800) 448-3543.
Also, check Sunday's editions of The Vindicator for local sites to donate. Blood donors must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and have general good health.
