Academics
YSU led all Horizon League institutions with 18 selections to the conference's 86-member spring academic all-league teams. Detroit was second with 15 picks while Butler and Cleveland State tallied 13 and 10 selections respectively. Loyola and Wright State each posted eight choices while UIC and UW-Milwaukee collected five and UW-Green Bay picked up four. The Penguins' men's and women's track and field teams had five students on the team while four baseball student-athletes were recognized. Women's and men's tennis and women's and men's golf each had one. First-team CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America selection Jarrod Davis (track and field) and second-team honoree Brandon Caipen (baseball) highlight the YSU honorees. Davis, who captured the javelin and hammer throw titles and was named the league's Field Performer of the Year, has a 4.0 grade-point average in computer information systems, while Caipen, a 28th-round draft choice of the Houston Astros, has a 3.82 GPA in integrated social studies. Other YSU students to make the team are Bethany Anderson (women's track, 3.44, health), Brian Boone (baseball, 3.61, exercise science), Emily Cicero (women's track, 3.83, food and nutrition), Lindsay Hill (women's track, 3.55, early childhood education), Dave Mealy (men's track, 3.57, integrated social studies), Brian Meek (men's tennis, 3.53, mechanical engineering), Josh Page (baseball, 3.90, middle childhood education), Gina Peretti (women's tennis, 3.89, political science), Ryan Sellman (baseball, 3.68, integrated social studies), John Sheppard (men's track, 3.59, exercise science), Bonnie Sherman (women's golf, 3.89, accounting), Nick Smith (men's track, 3.49, geology), Dave Weizer (men's track, 3.76, physical education), Katy Williams (women's track, 3.75, French), Carly Youlton (women's track, 3.65, exercise science) and Josh Zarlenga (men's golf, 3.85, accounting).
Men's golf
Boardman High graduate Tim Morrow and Mooney High graduate Jonathon Hamarik have signed letters-of-intent to play golf at YSU. Also signing was Eric Augustus (Lima Central Catholic). As a senior, Augustus tied for third at the Division III state meet by shooting 160 (78-82) to lead the Thunderbirds to the team title. He was a first-team all-state, first-team all-district, academic all-Ohio and all-district tournament selection as a senior. Hamarik, a four-year standout at Mooney, qualified for the Div. II state meet his senior year, finishing 54th with a 173 (84-89). He won the district meet with a 69. He won a Steel Valley Conference championship with the Cardinals and his season averages as a sophomore and junior rank him in the top 15 in the school's history. He was coached by Bob Banks. Morrow was a two-time Div. I state qualifier, participating as a freshman and sophomore. As a freshman, he was part of a Boardman team that placed 12th at the state meet. Morrow carded a 171 (83-88) for the event and was the second-highest freshman finisher. As a sophomore, he placed 10th as an individual with a 156 (81-75) and claimed second-team all-state honors. YSU finished second at the league meet this season, its best finish in a league meet since placing second at the 2000 Mid-Continent Conference championships.
Women's golf
Ann Ciavarella (Kent) and Brittany Stillwagon (Bloomingdale) have signed letters-of-intent with YSU. Stillwagon of Steubenville Central Catholic High School and Ciavarella of Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit competed at last fall's Division I state meet. Stillwagon finished 19th with a 176 as an individual while Ciavarella was 34th with a 185 as her school placed ninth out of 13 teams. Ciavarella was a three-time state qualifier at Walsh, finishing 19th (170) as a junior when Walsh won a state title. As a sophomore, she carded a 185 as Walsh placed sixth. As a senior she was a first-team all-city selection and earned the team's Coaches Award. This summer, Ciavarella has participated in 10 tournaments, finishing in the top three in three events while earning medalist honors in one. Stillwagon was a four-time district qualifier and three-time Eastern District Golfer of the Year during her high school career. In three of her four years she was named to the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Class AA All-Conference team. As a senior, she tied for second at the district meet and also finished second at the sectional meet. She won a district title as a sophomore. She has competed in numerous national, regional and local junior tournaments, including competing in the U.S. Girls' Junior Golf Championships at a sectional in Uniontown in the summer of 2004. In 2004-05 she was named to the OVAC's all-conference academic team. YSU finished second at the Horizon League meet and has placed in the top three in the league in each of the past three seasons.
