BOARDMAN FLOODING Meetings to update on projects

The meetings are expected to last about an hour each.
BOARDMAN -- Trustees have called two special meetings next month to inform people about four projects planned to address flooding.
A meeting at 6 p.m. July 10 will address the Ewing-Brookfield retention project followed by a 7 p.m. meeting on the South Shore Drive/Weir 1 project.
At 6 p.m. July 11, the Tara Drive-Alverne Drive retention project will be discussed, followed by the Ridgefield Avenue-Midwood Circle pipe enlargement project at 7 p.m.
All meetings will be in the township government center on Market Street.
Funds set aside
Trustees have set aside $1.25 million from this year's budget to address six flood control projects.
Trustees and representatives from the Youngstown engineering firm MS Consultants will present information, conceptual designs and timetables of the four projects during next month's meetings.
Residents whose property will be affected have been notified of the meetings so they can learn how the projects affect their land. Because the other two projects -- improving retention areas along Westview Drive and behind the Shops at Boardman Park -- don't involve residential property, those meetings haven't been scheduled, Trustee Kathy Miller said.
The six projects were identified as priorities last year by the township and MS Consultants.
Flood damage
After heavy rains that deluged much of the Mahoning Valley in summer 2003, township officials devised a list of projects aimed at alleviating stormwater problems. Some of those were designated as regional issues while others could be addressed using township funds.
Some of those flood-control projects have been done, including an $82,425 storm-sewer upgrade from East Parkside Drive to Spring Park Drive and miscellaneous ditch cleaning throughout the township for about $10,000.
