Jewell, Jackson among best in I-AA



YOUNGSTOWN -- The Sports Network has tabbed senior center Ryan Jewell and senior cornerback Codera Jackson of the Youngstown State University football team as the top NCAA I-AA players at their respective positions.
Junior Tom Zetts has been tabbed the 11th-best quarterback in I-AA while tailback Marcus Mason was ranked 25th at his position.
The senior tailback-tandem of Mason and Monquantae Gibson was selected as the fourth-best duo. The Penguins also feature senior Justin Reams at tailback. Each of the three individuals all had 100 yards rushing in a game in 2005.
Jewell has started 28 games in his three-year career and is one of six seniors on the Penguin offensive line this year along with John Foster, Jamel Lee, Pat Walker, Joe DeBee and Erik Claxon.
Jackson, a second-team All-America selection as a junior, led the conference and ranked in the top 10 nationally in interceptions. Along with senior Jason Perry, who was second-team All-Gateway pick as a junior, YSU has a pair impressive cornerbacks.
Perry is a three-year starter who helps anchor the secondary.
Camp around corner
The Penguins begin fall camp on August 3 and have their first practice the following day. The team's Annual Media/Photo Day scheduled for Wednesday, August 9 at Stambaugh Stadium. The annual Gateway Conference Media Day is scheduled for Tuesday, July 25 in St. Louis, Mo.
The Sports Network provides a weekly Division I-AA football poll and publicizes such national honors as the Buck Buchanan Award, the Walter Payton Award and the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award.
