State OKs funds for tech center
COLUMBUS -- Youngstown will receive $750,000 from the state to deal with asbestos and for some demolition work at the proposed Youngstown Technical Center.
The State Controlling Board approved Monday releasing the funds for the center, to be located in the 200 block of West Federal Street.
The 0.45-acre property is made up of seven parcels and is owned by the Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corporation.
The YCACIC has committed to building a three-story, 25,000-square-foot facility known as the Youngstown Technology Center on the site.
Turning Technologies LLC, a computer company, is interested in moving into the new center, state officials said. All redevelopment costs for the project are committed and anticipated to exceed $4 million, state officials said.
The YCACIC has owned the property since 1998. The property is vacant with two buildings in poor condition.
In other business, the controlling board approved releasing a $225,000 Thomas Edison Program grant to the Youngstown Business Incubator. The incubator will use the money to provide business assistance and product innovation services to start-up companies.
Made up of six state lawmakers and a representative of the governor's office, the state controlling board has the final say over some of the state's larger spending projects.
