YOUNGSTOWN -- Aggravated robbery warrants have been issued for 19-year-old John A. Jenkins, who detectives say used a gun last week to hold up three pizza shops on the West Side. Detectives said Jenkins, of Neosho Road, robbed Pizza Joe's on June 18, Cornersburg Pizza on June 19 and East of Chicago Pizza on June 22. All the businesses are on Canfield Road. The detectives said Monday that Jenkins was last seen over the weekend in Boardman and "is on the run." Jenkins is due in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court on Thursday for sentencing in an aggravated robbery case, the detectives said.
$175,000 raised
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Scholarship Foundation raised more than $175,000 in a dinner/auction event held recently at the Holiday Inn in Boardman. Several sports related trips -- including the 2007 Super Bowl in Miami -- were big hits with the crowd. Celebrities on hand for the Thursday event included Greg Pruitt, former Cleveland Browns running back; Tom Rathman, former San Francisco 49ers running back; and Ken Dorsey, Cleveland Browns quarterback. The foundation has awarded more than $350,000 in scholarships over the past decade.
Hair equipment stolen
BOARDMAN -- Seventeen flat irons used for straightening hair and worth a total of $2,267.95 were stolen from Trade Secrets in Southern Park Mall, police said. A store official said the thefts occurred between June 20 and Friday, the dates inventories were taken.
Homeowner detains man
BOARDMAN -- A township man was arrested after a homeowner on Melbourne Avenue caught him dragging a TV from the home, police said.
The suspect, Joseph A. Shura Jr., 26, of Amherst Drive, was restrained by the homeowner until police arrived. Shura admitted going into the house and stealing items to buy drugs, police said. Shura said that he was sorry. He was placed under arrest. A pair of pliers was found in his pocket.
While at the police station, Shura admitted trying to steal a radio out of a car parked in Chili's restaurant parking lot.
Shura was charged with one count of theft, one count of criminal damaging/endangering, one count of burglary and one count of possession of criminal tools. Shura is in Mahoning County jail. His arraignment is set for today.
House catches fire
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A North Liberty Street home caught fire as its occupant was fixing dinner. Firefighters said Hudson Dean put a oil in a pan on the stove to warm at 4:41 p.m. Sunday and went to take a shower. A neighbor saw flames a short time later and called for help. Fire fighters said the oil ignited the nearby cabinets and floor. Dean got out safely, they said.
Cigarette theft
MERCER, Pa. -- Two Chicago women were arrested with $33,000 worth of unstamped cigarettes in their car, state police said Monday. State police pulled over Sharon Porter, 34, and Tatonia Allen, 37, on Interstate 80 in Findlay Township at 11:50 a.m. June 20 for a traffic violation and found 780 cartons of cigarettes without the Pennsylvania stamp that indicates taxes had been paid on them.
