Spikes in CWS: Two future members of the State College Spikes have been each other in the College World Series, which concluded Monday. Right-handed pitcher Robert Woodard (46th round pick) was the Game 2 starter for North Carolina, receiving no decision in the 11-7 loss. Catcher Mitchell Canham, has been the starting backstop for Oregon State, going 3-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's Game 2.
New team on block: The State College Spikes were previously the New Jersey Cardinals. The Scrappers were 3-0 against New Jersey last season and 14-9 all time against the franchise.
One winless: There is only one winless team remaining in the New York-Penn League. Brooklyn Cyclones have started the season 0-6. They are last in the league in hitting (.193), runs scored (11) and ERA (7.29).
Today's starter: Michael Eisenberg, the eighth round draft selection out of Marietta College, will make his second start tonight against the Spikes. He pitched three innings and had no decision in his first outing against Jamestown. Eisenberg led Marietta to the Division III world series title and was the co-MVP of the tournament winning the championship game with 12 strikeouts in eight innings.
Scrapper notes: The Scrappers set season highs with 12 hits and 8 runs in Sunday's win over the Crosscutters and then matched the 12 hits Monday. Mahoning Valley pitchers had walked seven batters in the first five games of the year, then walked seven in Sunday's contest, four by Dan Frega in the eighth inning. Evandy DeLeon broke an 0-for-14 slump with two hits against the Crosscutters in the series final.
