Navy reveals more details on data breach

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Some of the Navy sailors and families whose personal data was discovered last week on a civilian Web site had been affected by Hurricane Katrina, the Navy said Monday.
Navy officials also said the names, birth dates and Social Security numbers of more than 30,000 individuals had been disclosed -- a bit higher than the 28,000 estimated last Friday when the breach was first revealed. The sailors involved were stationed in the Southern U.S. during the hurricane.
The Navy said Monday there are still no indications the information has been used illegally. No decision has been made on whether the Navy will pay for credit monitoring.
On Friday, the Navy said it had begun a criminal investigation after personal data for sailors and family members were found on the Internet.
