Volunteer agency sponsors courses

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Volunteer Services Agency Inc. is sponsoring courses promoting civil action among youth.
Agency officials said the Service Learning Impacting Citizenship Institute will be at the Fairview Center for Performing Arts, 4220 Youngstown-Poland Road, on Oct. 28. The event is free and attendance is limited to the first 100 people who register. Participants must be in grades 9 to 12 for the 2006-07 school year.
The institute is aimed at providing youth with the skills and knowledge to become active voters, volunteers and general participants of society, officials said.
The curriculum is divided into two courses. Civic knowledge covers the fundamentals of democracy, how to work with local government, communication skills and how to mobilize citizens. The skills and issues course covers teen health, literacy, hunger, seniors and the environment.
