Man in stable condition after police chase

GUILFORD LAKE -- A man who was shot during a chase involving a Columbiana County sheriff's deputy was in stable condition Friday at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Sheriff David L. Smith said it appears the wound was self-inflicted as the deputy chased David Rogenski, 42, through woods Thursday near his girlfriend's house on Speidel Road in East Rochester.
Smith said the deputy, whom he would not name, was attempting to serve a protection order on Rogenski, who was staying at the house. The girlfriend had filed the order, he added. Smith said deputies tried five or six times to serve the order in the previous few days.
Smith said that about 7 p.m., the deputy got out of his vehicle at the home and saw a man at the tree line behind it. As the deputy approached him, the man fled into the woods.
The deputy heard gunfire as he chased the man, Smith said. The deputy also pulled his weapon and fired, Smith said.
The deputy found Rogenski on the ground, shot in the upper chest. He was taken by helicopter to St. Elizabeth's.
Smith said it's routine that when a deputy is involved in a shooting, a team from his office is assembled to investigate. He also said the Ohio Bureau of Identification and Investigation has been called in to review the matter. The bureau interviewed Rogenski at the hospital Friday, the sheriff said.
