Golfers will scramble in Howland for ACS
Proceeds from the event will finance programs for young cancer patients.
HOWLAND -- The 15th annual golf outing scheduled by Youngstown Police Department will be held July 14 at Avalon South Golf Course as a benefit for youth programs sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
The all-day tournament will begin with registration at 11 a.m. and a shotgun start at noon. The cost to play in the four-person scramble is $70 for each golfer. Participants will be entitled to 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, snacks, prizes, skins, mulligans, beverages, lunch and a steak dinner.
Organizers of the outing include Laura Brown, project analyst; Fred Losasso, Youngstown police officer; John Patton, Youngstown detective sergeant; and Tony Tulipano.
Proceeds from the event are earmarked for the following:
Camp scholarships for children and young adults who are being treated for cancer or who are in remission from cancer. Youths may attend an oncology or special interest camp.
Youth cancer survivor scholarship program providing $1,000 scholarships to college-bound students in Ohio who are 18 to 25 years of age and were diagnosed with cancer before the age of 21. Recipients are chosen on the basis of scholastic performance, community service and leadership.
Stay Tobacco-free athlete mentor program in which trained high school students present four curriculum-based classroom sessions designed to teach students in upper elementary and middle schools the harmful effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke.
Coordinated school health education programs provided by the cancer society in partnership with schools, community members and local coalitions in order to promote healthy school environments and healthy lifestyle choices for children. Covered are such topics as nutrition, physical activity and tobacco use prevention.
