Fire destroys garages, damages residence
ELLWOOD CITY -- Joe and Sara Jane McCandless, an elderly brother and sister who live at 241 Fourth St., were unharmed after a fire destroyed two garages on their property. The third-floor of their residence sustained smoke and water damage.
Ellwood City Fire Department received a call about 2 a.m. Saturday, and the fire was under control by 4:40 a.m. The department remained at the scene to handle hot spots. The fire is under investigation by Ellwood City fire and police departments and Pennsylvania State Police.
The large one-story and two-story garages and contents were destroyed. The fire was fueled by wood stored inside.
Fire departments from Beaver Falls, Chewton, Franklin, North Beaver, Shenango and Wayne townships, Wurtemburg-Perry and Zelienople assisted. About 70 firefighters were at the scene along with the EMS command trailer from Lawrence County and the Red Cross. There were no injuries.
