Thirteen students from area high schools were delegates at the 2006 Buckeye Girls State program at Ashland University recently. They are: Amanda Barzak, Jennifer Morocco, Courtney Dombroski, Amanda Green, Lauren Brown and Jamie Fynes, all of McDonald; Rachael Ballas and Katie Einzig, both of Youngstown; Lisa Pitcairn and Kristiana Brown, both of Berlin Center; Alicia Allison and Elizabeth Hughes, both of North Jackson; and Amanda Tharp of Hubbard. All were chosen by local American Legion Auxiliary Units to attend the program. Girls State is a national program conducted in each state to promote patriotism, citizenship and government participation. This year, nearly 900 girls from across Ohio attended.
Scholarship applications
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Italian Heritage Foundation is accepting applications for four scholarships to be awarded to students attending Youngstown State University this fall. The scholarships, all worth $1,000, are: The Centofanti Scholarship, the Tony Lariccia Family Scholarship, the Fernando Riccione Scholarship and the Don Pipino Scholarship. July 3 is the application deadline and applicants must submit a biography explaining their high school experience and an essay explaining why they should receive the scholarship and what their plans are for attending YSU. Applications should be mailed to Flora Direnzo Schneider, 141 Homestead Drive, Columbiana, Ohio 44408.
YSU Preview Day
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University's Office of Undergraduate Admissions will hold its YSU Preview Day for high school juniors and seniors form 8:30 a.m. to noon July 8. The program targets high school juniors who are beginning their college search and seniors who have yet to apply to YSU for the fall 2006 semester. The day begins with a breakfast buffet in Kilcawley Center, followed by an address by Mayor Jay Williams of Youngstown (a 1994 YSU graduate) and meetings with representatives of YSU's six colleges to learn what academic majors are available. Campus visitors will also get to meet YSU students, get campus tours and meet with college representatives who can assist with admission applications and financial aid issues. Church to open day care
CLARKS MILLS, Pa. -- Clarks Mills United Methodist Church is opening the Jubilee Day Care for children from infant to age 5. Children up to age 12 will be accepted for after-school care. The public is invited to attend an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the church, 3813 Hadley Road. The program is part of the church outreach mission. It will operate under the direction of Sandy Patterson, a former teacher with 33 years of experience. Registration will be accepted at the open house. The fee is $20. Rates are $3.75 per hour for children up to 36 months; $3.50 per hour for children 3 to 5 years old; and $3 per hour for children 5 and older for after-school care, with a minimum fee of $50 per month. Joining concert tour
BOARDMAN -- Katie Yazvac, daughter of Tom and Diane Yazvac of Tanglewood Drive, has been selected to join the United States Youth Ensembles 2006 European Concert Tour. The young violinist will join music students from across the United States as they tour western Europe in July. Katie has played in the Boardman Symphony and Chamber orchestras all four of her high school years and is assistant concertmaster with the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Regional Orchestra. She also participated in the All-State Orchestra this year. She teaches private lessons for violin and piano students and is a member of the BHS Theater Orchestra, the Dana School of Music Chamber Orchestra and the ENCORE string quartet. She will attend Youngstown State University this fall as a University Scholar, with plans to major in veterinary medicine with a minor in music.
Photo contest winner
YOUNGSTOWN -- Former Youngstown resident Jessica Walp, now living in Lincoln, Ala., won first place in the photography category in the national "What About Peace?" contest. The contest had entries from across the United States expressing entrants' feelings and ideas about peace. Her winning photo featured two preschool children from Ashville (Ala.) Pre-School.
