Officials invest heavily in social programs
Federal funds will provide a summer school program for the Crestview schools.
LISBON -- The Columbiana County commissioners approved more than $420,000 in federal funds for a variety of social service programs at their Wednesday meeting.
Eileen Dray-Bardon, director of the county's Department of Job and Family Services, presented the projects. The one-year programs begin July 1.
Projects
They are:
USome $150,000 to the Columbiana Metropolitan Housing Authority to promote self-sufficiency training to school students in subsidized housing complexes in East Liverpool and Wellsville.
UTwo pacts with the Crestview Board of Education. One for $71,112 will provide in- and after-school and summer school programming for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. That will be done by the Way Station, along with $56,864 grant to provide year-round academic and abstinence education. The Way Station is a faith-based organization. Dray-Bardon said the Way Station will be working with school officials on the content of the program. Federal funds can't be used for religious programs.
UThe Way Station also received another $65,648 to provide in and after school and summer school programming for children in Kindergarten through grade four in the Beaver Local School District. It will also work there with school officials on the program's content.
UThe Columbiana County Educational Service Center also received $62,250 to operate academic and other help to low-income pupils in grades seven to 12 who have troubles in their home school district.
UThe county health department will get $15,050 for providing a child safety-seat program.
The commissioners approved slightly more than $400,000 for similar programs last week.
