The Buckeye Best Healthy School Awards Program is designed to recognize those schools whose policies and practices reflect a high priority on healthy outcomes for children.
The program is sponsored by the Ohio Department of Health in partnership with the American Cancer Society's Ohio Division as part of the Ohio Department of Health's Healthy Ohioans campaign.
Each year the program accepts applications and rank schools based upon their progress to achieve a gold standard in the areas of tobacco, nutrition and physical activity.
Earlier this year, South Range adopted a wellness policy, and, from there established a wellness advisory team. The team made recommendations on the development of a plan that would encourage wellness through better nutrition and regular physical activity.
Last month, the board approved a wellness plan that calls for the district to promote health and fitness by encouraging pupils, parents and school staff to make healthier choices.
In other matters, the board passed a resolution recognizing schools Superintendent James Hall for 20 years of service. Hall is retiring at the end of the month. High school principal Dennis Dunham has been named his replacement.
