LORDSTOWN -- Glen Buckman, 54, of Newton Township is the man who jumped off a bridge Monday afternoon and onto a rail coal car between Ellsworth-Bailey and Ernest-Lintz roads, police said. Buckman then fell between cars and onto the tracks. Authorities were notified at 1:37 p.m. when they received a phone call from a motorist who saw Buckman jump. There was no note or apparent motive, authorities said.
12 teachers rehired
SALEM -- The Salem Board of Education has recalled 12 instructors, Superintendent Stephen Larcomb said Tuesday. The board had reduced its teaching ranks by 32 members earlier this year before voters approved a five-year levy in May. Larcomb said that only two or three more teachers may be recalled before the start of the new school year. Larcomb said it may take until the third year of the levy until the school finances are back to normal. Another economic unknown is the new contract teachers are to vote on this evening. If the teachers approve it, the board will hold a special meeting on June 29 to approve it.
Money, pizza stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man who ordered a 14-inch pizza at Cornersburg Pizza on Canfield Road waited until he was the only customer in the business at 4:45 p.m. Monday and then pulled a gun, robbed the store and fled, police said. Sunday evening, a clerk at Pizza Joe's on Canfield Road was robbed at gunpoint of around $700, police said.
Gas station robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The manager at the Shell (True North) gas station on Market Street was hit in the head with the butt of a gun and forced to open the safe around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said. The robber took an unspecified amount of cash and ran out. The gunman had been hiding in the bed of a disabled pickup truck parked in the lot and approached the manager as she arrived for work, reports show. The robbery was recorded by the store's video surveillance.
Septic tank reminders
BERLIN CENTER -- The Mahoning County District Board of Health will mail notices to 904 Milton and Berlin township households with septic systems to remind them to have their septic tanks pumped. The reminder will include a list of licensed pumpers. A 1,000-gallon tank serving a four-person household should be pumped every three years, the health department said.
Juvenile rape reported
WARREN -- City police are investigating the reported rape of a juvenile female. Her mother reported it Monday. The suspect, a male juvenile, is known to the teenage victim, police said.
DARE to continue
COLUMBIANA -- The village school board pledged its continued support of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program at its recent meeting. Funding for the program had been a problem, but the school district recently learned of the availability of grants through the Ohio Attorney General's office to help pay for the program.
Man accused in stabbing
STONEBORO, Pa. -- A borough man is accused of stabbing his best friend after an argument in a bar. Pennsylvania State Police said Brad Meade Quillen, 27, is charged with simple assault, possessing instruments of crime and recklessly endangering another person. Police said he got into an argument with a 27-year-old man at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday in Quillen's Cafe on Walnut Street as the two were drinking beer. Quillen pulled a knife and thrust it into the man's left leg, police said. The two had been best friends, police said. The victim was treated at UPMC Greenville.
I-79 lane to be closed
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The right lane of Interstate 79 will be closed in both directions, weather permitting, Thursday through Monday in Plain Grove Township, Lawrence County. The lane closures will occur only between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Crews will be taking core samples from the road.
