Laying of the Roses
Korean War Veterans Mahoning Valley Chapter 137 will conduct the Laying of the Roses ceremony at 1 p.m. next Sunday at Memorial Park at Mahoning Avenue and Wickliffe Circle in Austintown. Dr. Paul Jong Won Lim, president of the Korean American Association of the Greater Youngstown Area, is the main speaker. The public is invited to attend.

Annual reunion planned
The 337-1338th Army Combat Engineers World War II Veterans' 60th annual reunion is Aug. 10-13, 2006, at the Holiday Inn Hotel near the Pittsburgh Airport. The battalion, made up primarily of men from West Virginia, southern Ohio and southwestern Pennsylvania, fought in Africa and Italy from 1943 until the end of the war in 1945. Took command of station
Coast Guard Chief Electronics Technician Kenneth J. McKinley, a 1987 graduate of McDonald High School and son of Kenneth and Elaine McKinley, was recently promoted to his present rank and took command of the Loran Coast Guard Station, Dana, Ind. McKinley, who joined the Coast Guard in 1987, most recently served in search and rescue in the Bering Straight.
HONORS
Officer of the Year
Air Force Master Sgt. Damian T. Orslene is the 81st Mission Support Squadron's 2005 Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year. Orslene, a customer support superintendent with 23 years of military service, is assigned to Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. The son of William T. and Annette V. Orslene of Warren, he is a 1982 graduate of Howland High School and received an associate degree in 1989 from the Community College of the Air Force.
DEPLOYED
In Afghanistan
Air Force Staff Sgt. Brian D. Averhart has deployed to a forward-operating location in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He is an aeromedical evacuation technician regularly assigned to the 18th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa. Averhart, the son of John and Karen Averhart of Youngstown, is a 1995 graduate of Rayen High School.
Supporting operations
Air Force Tech. Sgt. David S. Harding has deployed to the U.S. Central Command Air Forces Combined Air Operations Center in Southwest Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Horn of Africa. He is a combined air operations center/communications supervisor regularly assigned to the 82nd Communications Support Squadron, Langley Air Force Base, Va. Harding, the son of James and Dorothy Harding of Edinburg, Pa., graduated in 1988 from Mohawk High School, Bessemer, Pa., and received an associate degree in 1996 from the Community College of the Air Force. His wife, Kristine, is the daughter of John Raymond Klepfer of Bessemer.
In Southwest Asia
Air Force Reserve Master Sgt. Korene R. Rooks has deployed to the U.S. Central Command Air Forces Combined Air Operations Center in Southwest Asia to support the missions of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Horn of Africa. She is a personnel superintendent regularly assigned to the 910th Air Wing, Youngstown-Warren Air Reserve Station, Vienna. She is the daughter of Paul and Lillian Pearce of Hadley, Pa., and is a 1975 graduate of Commodore Perry High School, Hadley.

Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Joshua E. Dahman has graduated from the Air Transportation Apprentice Course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is the son of David D. and Terraina A. Dahman of Greenville, Pa. He is a 2004 graduate of Reynolds Junior-Senior High School.

Army ROTC Cadet Melissa L. Campbell received the George C. Marshall Award for her ROTC accomplishments while a student at Norwich University, Northfield, Utah. Campbell's husband, Tom, is the son of Steve W. and Patricia L. Campbell of Farrell, Pa. She is a 2002 graduate of Hampshire Regional High School, Westhampton, Mass.
