EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Fernando Pisani and Raffi Torres scored 8:09 apart in the second period to give the Edmonton Oilers a 2-0 lead over the Carolina Hurricanes after 40 minutes in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals Saturday night.
Pisani, who scored the first short-handed goal in overtime in the finals to end Game 5, staked the Oilers to the lead when he netted a rare power-play goal at 1:45 of the second. Pisani, who had only 18 goals in the regular season, has an NHL-best 13 in the playoffs.
Torres made it 2-0 on the shift following Carolina's greatest pressure of the game. The Oilers were running around in their zone when the puck bounced out past Hurricanes defenseman Frantisek Kaberle at the right point.
The Oilers were the seventh team in the finals to win Game 5 on the road when trailing 3-1 in the series. Three of those previous six clubs got to a seventh game, with only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs skating off with the Cup.
If necessary, Carolina would host Game 7 of this matchup Monday night.
Strong start
Edmonton was dominant throughout the first two periods and just needed some time to break through on the scoreboard.
After holding a 10-3 edge in shots through the opening frame, the Oilers started solving 22-year-old rookie goalie Cam Ward while shutting down Carolina's offense.
The shots were 14-3 when Pisani fired a backhander off the skate of Carolina defenseman Glen Wesley and past Ward. It was 18-3 on the shot clock at 9:54, the time Torres deflected in a drive by Steve Staios.
Justin Williams finally recorded the Hurricanes' first shot of the second period with 5:49 left. Edmonton finished with the frame with a 21-7 edge for the game.
Carolina had only two shots in the third period of Game 5 and none in overtime.
The Hurricanes carried 1:35 of its second power play into the second period but lost the final 18 seconds to a too many men on the ice penalty. Pisani took advantage 37 seconds later, giving Edmonton its third power-play goal in 35 chances this series.
