Myths at Villa
Myths at Villa
VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- An ecofeminist conference, "Myths, Goddesses and Archetypes," will be offered July 2-7 at Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center. Dr. Mary Judith Ress, a native of Massillon, will lead the team of presenters in this exploration of the ideas that shape images of women.
The workshop is a chance for women leaders in the community to collaborate in the development of proposals for local and community action. The conference began in Santiago, Chile, as the School of Ecofeminist Spirituality and Ethics and was sponsored by the Con-spirando Women's Collective. Annually, about 40 activist female leaders from as many as 11 Latin American countries share, through personal stories and deconstruction of archetypes, how myths sustain culture, religion and cosmology.
Ress, a theologian who authored "Ecofeminism in Latin America," says the purpose of the conference is to help "women develop an ethical capacity that encourages them to discover power within themselves and to make just decisions about their bodies, their relationships, their society."
Co-presenter Dr. Rachael Fitzgerald is a Jungian psychologist and expert in feminine archetypes. Other speakers are Marjua Gonzalez, lay minister; Veronica Cordero, herbal healer; and Gloria Salazar, feminist anthropologist.
Registration and tuition for this six-day conference is $700 and includes meals and overnight accommodations. Call (724) 964-8920, Ext. 3308, or email Bsitko@humilityofmary.org for registration or more information.

Volunteer patients will test the effectiveness of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), a newer treatment modality for plantar fasciitis, a condition which afflicts connective tissue at the bottom of the foot and can lead to chronic heel pain and heel spur syndrome. The device involved in the clinical trials, manufactured by Storz Medical AG, is a smaller version of one used in hospitals. It is hoped that the new, smaller device will enable ESWT to be performed in physicians' offices, said Dr. Lawrence DiDimenico, managing partner of Ankle & amp; Foot Care Centers.
