Junior Civic League presents scholarships



Students were rewarded for scholastic and personal achievement.
BOARDMAN -- The Junior Civic League presented scholarships to eight area high school graduates and installed a slate of officers during its annual scholarship luncheon held June 11 at Antone's Banquet Center, 8578 Market St.
Selected on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, community involvement and personal qualities and strengths, the recipients of the $1,500 scholarship awards for the 2006-2007 academic year were:
Breonna Marie Rivers and Shavail Garrett, Chaney High School.
Myesha Carlock, Hattie Gilbert, Jalise Humphrey, Victoria Lightfoot, and DeJan Toney, The Rayen School.
Lyneise Williams, Liberty High School.
Since its inception, the Junior Civic League has awarded more than $380,000 in scholarships to area high school students.
Officers seated during the induction ceremony were Betty Scott, president; Elsina Winston, vice president; Christine Hennings, treasurer; Pamela Murrell, financial secretary; Addie Smith recording secretary; Doris Bullock, corresponding secretary; Mary Monroe, chaplain; Estelle Payne, historian; Molly Seals, parliamentarian; and Susan Moorer, public relations.
The guest speaker for the event was Sonja Williams, wife of Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams and coordinator of the Upward Bound program at Youngstown State University.
