EVENTS FOR YOUTHS DURING THE ONGOING BICENTENNIAL AND THE UPCOMING OHIO CHAUTAUQUA PROGRAM.
Events for youths during the ongoing Bicentennial and the upcoming Ohio Chautauqua program.
BICENTENNIAL
July 1-2: Zadok Street Festival, sponsored by the Larwen Council for the Arts, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 1 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 2 at Centennial Park. Activities include an interactive village, a traveling mural, theater events on the hour, guided visual arts classes, a community youth art exhibition, and a juried high school art show.
July 1: A potato chip hunt sponsored by Herron Foods and WS Investments will be at 1 p.m. at the former Grand Theatre lot on East State Street.
July 1: 8 p.m., opening ceremony with patriotic music and fireworks begins, Waterworth Memorial Park.
July 2: "Sword of the Spirit," a dramatization of letters written between John Brown and his wife as he awaited trial for the raid on Harper's Ferry, Sixth Street Quaker Meetinghouse, 7:30 p.m. The performance is sponsored by the Larwen Council for the Arts and Brown Funeral Home.
July 3: "The Many Faces of Old Glory," presented by Vane Scott, Salem Community Theatre, 7:30 p.m. Salem VFW Post 892 is sponsoring the program that traces the numerous flags that are part of our American history. Seating is limited and a free ticket is required by contacting Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.
July 4: Salem Memorial and Patriotic Association sponsoring children's games beginning at 1 p.m. on South Broadway Avenue. Children will also be able to decorate toy cars. A pet parade is at 1:45.
July 5: Square dancing, 6 p.m., McCulloch's municipal lot on East State Street. Salem Square Wheels is sponsoring the event and the adult square dance that follows at 7 p.m. at the same location.
July 7: Children's Parish Fair, 4 to 8 p.m., Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 251 S. Broadway Ave. Hot dogs and drinks will be available.
July 8-9: Two-day military encampment with an emphasis on the Civil War, Waterworth Memorial Park. All wars will be represented with displays and demonstrations. Firing of Civil War weapons, 11 a.m. and 1, 3 and 4 p.m. July 8, and noon, 2 and 4 p.m. July 9.
July 12: Family picnic, 4 p.m., Waterworth Memorial Park. Salem YWCA is sponsoring games. At 6 p.m. there will be a chalk contest sponsored by Salem Junior Mothers' Club with ice cream gift cards presented to winners in age groups of 3-6 years, 7-9 years and 10-12 years. Hot air balloons will lift off at 7 p.m., sponsored by Essex of Salem, Holander House and Twin Oaks Retirement Center.
July 15: Children's games, a bounce house and a rock wall, downtown Salem, and 10 a.m., Super Kids Classic Soap Box Derby for challenged children on South Broadway Avenue., all sponsored by Salem Retail and Business Association; and Empire Statesmen Drum and Bugle Corps will lead off the Grand Parade at 5:30 p.m.
OHIO CHAUTAUQUA
Each day a workshop for children age 8 and above will be at 10 a.m. at Salem Public Library. They include:
July 18: "Every Child Is a Partner: American and British Children in World War II," led by Michael Hughes, a discussion of the role children played in World War II.
July 19: "If Only I Had Been Born An Inca," led by Hank Fincken, a discussion on the Incas and what makes a civilization great, and "Stories of Peace and Justice," a discussion on peace, justice, and community-building.
July 20: "Exploring the Natural World," led by Gene Worthington, will include a nature walk.
July 22: "Adopted by the Indians," led by Dan Cutler, will discuss Indian culture and why they felt justified in adopting white children after the diseases from whites had killed theirs. American Indian games also will be taught.
