Area Envirothon
COLUMBIANA -- Two teams from Crestview High School scored well in the Area Envirothon held at Painesville. Team A, consisting of Jessie Lanterman (captain), Chris Simmons, Ben Endicott, Sam Baer and Emily Landis, placed first out of the 10 Columbiana County teams and seventh out of 61 area teams. Team B, consisting of Corey Kelly (captain), Tricia Scott, Lisa Braden, Amanda Cresanto and Rachel Matthews, placed fifth out of the 10 Columbiana County teams and 32nd out of the 61 area teams.
Pupils recognized
MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. -- Several area young people are among 1,500 nationwide recognized by Kohl's Department Stores through the Kids Who Care program for voluntarily helping to transform their communities. The local honorees and their efforts are: Megan Fogel, 11, Liberty -- donation of a Christmas shoe box collection; Breann Partezana, 10, East Liverpool -- volunteering at a Columbiana County dog shelter; Elizabeth Pugh, 18, Youngstown -- caring for disabled children; and Alyssa Hartman, 18, Cortland -- mission service in South America.
Franklin B. Walter Award
HANOVERTON -- Kara Greene, daughter of Brenda and Jay Greene, and a graduating senior from United Local High School, was named the Columbiana County Franklin B. Walter Award Winner by Anna Marie Vaughn, Columbiana County Education Service Center superintendent.
Justice Art Contest winner
YOUNGSTOWN -- Struthers High School art student Elizabeth Cramer won the first Justice Art Contest for Mahoning County. The competition, open to high school juniors and seniors, is slated to become an annual event. Participants must capture their interpretation of justice utilizing their medium of choice in an 8x10 format. The winning selections will be displayed in the chambers of Judge Mary DeGenaro of the Seventh District Court of Appeals. Elizabeth first created an illustration of a view of the Statue of Liberty from Ellis Island utilizing the Pointillism technique with pen and ink and then scanned it into a computer and painted it with watercolor.
Festival volunteers sought
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Summer Festival of the Arts, scheduled for July 8 and 9 at Youngstown State University, is seeking volunteers for the event. Help is needed for artist registration, information booths, the children's hands-on art tent, technical assistance at performance sites and at the Festival of Nations international area. Various shifts are available for the two-day event. Each volunteer receives a festival T-shirt, cold water and reserved free parking.
