Fifth Avenue closing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fifth Avenue between Grant and Wood streets will close at 5 p.m. June 23 in preparation for the Youngstown Soap Box Derby race, which begins at 9 a.m. June 24. The closure is in effect until about 8 p.m. June 24 unless there is a rain delay.
If the June 24 event is rained out, the road will be closed Sunday, June 25, for an undetermined amount of time. During evening hours, traffic will be permitted to cross Fifth Avenue at Lincoln Avenue only. A notice in Wednesday's Vindicator gave incorrect dates for the closing.
Boardman scam
BOARDMAN -- Township police are warning residents about a possible scam. Several residents have reported receiving telephone calls from someone who tells them that if they leave $10 taped to their mailbox, their address will be painted on the curb. The money has been taken from the boxes, but the work wasn't done. Police believe more than 30 people have been victims so far.
Mom: Teen shot man
YOUNGSTOWN -- An Alamo Place woman told police that her teen-age son shot her live-in boyfriend in the back around 2:30 a.m. Thursday. The victim, Marcus Clinkscale, 31, was in satisfactory condition late Thursday at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The 32-year-old woman said she and Clinkscale had been arguing in the driveway and he broke her car window. Her 15-year-old son then emerged from the house, and she heard three to four shots, reports show. She drove Clinkscale to the hospital. The shooting remains under investigation.
Woodside vandalized
AUSTINTOWN -- Vandals struck again at Woodside Elementary School on Elmwood Avenue, police report. Officers went to the school Wednesday at 4:46 p.m. after an alarm went off there, a report says.
They found a broken window at the school with a small rock lying near it. Police said it didn't look as if anyone tried to enter the school. The school was vandalized over the weekend also, police said earlier this week. Vandals broke a window, spilled a bag of sugar and painted graffiti on the building.
Stolen copper
YOUNGSTOWN -- Copper parts worth roughly $50,000 were discovered missing from large metal boxes that hold air conditioning parts outside Marucci and Gaffney Co. on Hogue Street, the owner told police. The owner said he checked the large boxes in mid-May and they were OK. The theft was discovered Monday but not reported until Wednesday. Copper has been in the news lately with the deaths of a men in Campbell and Warren Township. Police believe both men were electrocuted while trying to steal copper.
Rise and Shrine
YOUNGSTOWN -- Shriner's Children's Hospital is sponsoring it's second-annual Rise and Shrine at the Chevrolet Centre parking lot Saturday.
Motorcycle riders will take off to Shriner's Children's Hospital in Erie, Pa., at 10:30 p.m. to visit the children and present them with gifts. They will be returning to the Chevrolet Centre around 4:30 for a raffle, vendor displays and music by the House Band.
A donation of $15 per person includes a pin (first 500 registered), lunch at the turn in Erie, meal upon return to Youngstown and a chance at the door prize.

PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- Moraine State Park hosts a program for children on birds and how and why they can fly at 1 p.m. Saturday. Participants are to meet in the park's Pleasant Valley picnic area on the south shore.
