Mother gets probation in death of newborn
CANTON (AP) -- A mother who says she accidentally rolled over her infant son in bed and smothered him has been placed on probation for five years.
Judge Richard D. Reinbold Jr. of Stark County Common Pleas Court also ordered Andrea B. Cantrell, 21, of suburban Lexington Township, to be treated for drug and alcohol abuse. She was sentenced Monday.
Cantrell pleaded guilty in May to involuntary manslaughter and child endangering. Her 2-week-old son, Hunter, suffocated in December 2004 while sleeping in bed with her.
Cantrell had been drinking alcohol before bringing the baby into her bed. Cantrell said she woke up and found the infant under her body.
Cantrell has a son, Glenn, who was born four months ago. She is allowed to have supervised visits with the boy, who is in his father's custody.
