Indians moves
NEW YORK -- The Cleveland Indians optioned reliever Jason Davis to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday and recalled right-hander Jeremy Guthrie.
Davis was 2-1 with a 5.04 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 21 relief appearances for Cleveland, allowing 38 hits and seven walks in 30 1-3 innings. Opponents were batting .314 against him.
"He's showed signs of coming around up here, but he just never got to the point where he was consistent enough to where he was pitching like we felt he was capable of pitching. It really goes back to him being able to repeat his delivery, and that fastball command and being aggressive with it down in the zone," manager Eric Wedge said "Hopefully, he'll be back up here."
Davis will continue to pitch out of the bullpen in the minors.
"He's had outings up here that were pretty good. You can see that his stuff really plays out of the bullpen. And I think his personality pushes him toward that, too," Wedge said. "I think we need to stick with it. I still feel like that's his best role."
Guthrie joins the Indians for the second time this season. He went 0-0 with a 4.63 ERA in six relief appearances from April 22 to May 9, yielding nine walks and 11 hits in 11 2-3 innings. He was sent back to Buffalo on May 16 when reliever Rafael Betancourt came off the disabled list.
Guthrie was starting at Buffalo, where he is 3-1 with a 2.78 ERA in eight outings. The Indians hope he can help a pitching staff that had the fourth-worst ERA in the AL (4.96) entering Tuesday night's game against the New York Yankees.
"Guthrie has been outstanding down there, obviously," Wedge said. "Good arm, good stuff. We'll have him ready to go."
The Indians also agreed to terms with Lehigh catcher Matt McBride, the 75th overall selection in this month's draft.
