Electrocuted man ID'd
CAMPBELL -- The man who was found electrocuted in the former Cold Metal Products plant has been identified by family members as Louis C. McGee, 40, of North Pearl Street, Youngstown, the Mahoning County coroner's office said. Police said McGee broke into the plant over the weekend to strip out copper scrap. He died when he tried to cut a live wire and fell 25 feet to the factory floor. There was no identification on the body, police said.
Unsafe-driving citation
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police issued Thomas A. Salman of East Florida Avenue a citation charging him with operating an unsafe vehicle after the 1984 Chevrolet Camaro he was driving traveled off the road on East Florida near Jean Street around 5 p.m. Monday. The car crossed several yards and struck multiple fixed objects and two parked cars before coming to rest in an East Florida Avenue driveway, police said. Salman, 34, told police the Camaro's throttle jammed and he could not disengage the accelerator.
Oven catches fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- A gas oven caught on fire after a Wick Avenue woman set the oven to the self-cleaning mode and forgot to remove a pot inside Monday night, the fire department said. The fire was confined to the oven, which was destroyed.
Income-tax worker fired
WARREN -- City officials fired an employee in the income tax office Monday for theft and gross neglect of duty. Melody Byard of Perkins Drive Northwest had been placed on unpaid leave in September 2005 after an internal audit found she had stolen $75.86. On May 31, Byard pleaded guilty in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to one count of theft and three counts of tampering with records. Her sentencing hasn't been scheduled.
School vandalized
AUSTINTOWN -- Vandals struck at Woodside Elementary School on Elmwood Avenue sometime during the weekend, police report. An employee reported Monday that someone broke a classroom window. A bag of sugar, a can of beets and classroom workbooks were taken from a shelf in the room and left outside the building. Someone also wrote graffiti in paint on the building.
Final water bill
LISBON -- The Salem Utilities Commission voted Tuesday to send a final bill to the Columbiana County commissioners for water the city provides to the federal prison in Elkton. Federal prison officials had wanted the water sold through the commissioners when the prison was built. The county added a 10 percent surcharge that brought the county about $50,000 a year. Geoffrey Goll, the head of the commission, said the city will continue to supply water to the prison. He said he had not learned the deadline for proposals for water service to the prison.
Fifth Avenue closing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fifth Avenue between Grant and Wood streets will close at 5 p.m. Friday in preparation for the Youngstown Soap Box Derby race, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. The closure is in effect until about 8 p.m. Saturday unless there is a rain delay. If Saturday's event is rained out, the road will be closed Sunday for an undetermined amount of time. During evening hours, traffic will be permitted to cross Fifth Avenue at Lincoln Avenue only.
