Monday's low of 42 degrees ties a record
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley tied a record low for June 12 on Monday, the National Weather Service said.
The Valley's low for Monday was 42 degrees at 5:55 a.m. That ties the record set in 1979.
Through Sunday, the Valley's average temperature for June 2006 was 61 degrees, 2.5 degrees lower than the average for the first 11 days of June.
NWS records show the average temperature for June gets warmer as the month progresses.
The average June temperature for the area is 65.9 degrees. If the Valley continues to be 2.5 degrees lower than the average, this will be among the coldest Junes in the area's recorded weather history, which dates to 1943.
The coldest June was in 1972 when the average temperature was 60.8 degrees.
It was only two weeks ago the Valley was setting record high temperatures.
The Valley had record highs May 30 and 31 with temperatures of 89 degrees and 88 degrees, respectively.
The average May temperature for the area is 57.6 degrees. Last month's average temperature was 57.2 degrees, or 0.4 degrees lower than average for May since 1943.
