YOUNGSTOWN -- Every Wednesday since March 29, Mahoning County residents and business owners have been dropping off unwanted electronic equipment at the recycling site at Coitsville Township, enough to fill a tractor-trailer each week.
Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. will be the last chance to recycle items in the county until October, said Jim Petuch, director of the Mahoning County Commissioners' Reuse and Recyling Division, better known as the Green Team.
Coitsville Township's recycling site is at 3737 McCartney Road.
What to bring
Petuch said county residents can recycle unwanted personal computers, monitors, keyboards, etc., as well as printers, cell phones and television sets.
He said only table-top fax machines and copiers will be accepted.
Except for television sets, there is no charge to recycle items at the drop-off site, he said. There is a $5 charge for television sets of any size because they are difficult to recycle, Petuch said.
"There are thousands of PCs in landfills, so these types of programs really help," Petuch said. "It is far better for the computers to be dismantled and components reused. Monitors and TVs also contain lead, which is hazardous and shouldn't be put in a landfill. People should never try to take a television or monitor apart at home because of the lead."
Petuch said the Green Team received a $22,000 Ohio Department of Natural Resources grant to conduct the electronics recycling. There will be four more chances for residents and business owners to recycle electronics this year -- on Wednesdays in October at the Berlin Township recycling site, 15823 W. Akron-Canfield Road.
