BOARDMAN -- About 6.5 miles of township roads will be resurfaced this year as part of the annual program.
Trustees voted unanimously Monday to award the contract for resurfacing work to Shelly and Sands of Girard. That company submitted the lowest bid, $422,105, of the two companies that bid on the project. Shelly and Sands' bid also includes an additional $3,500 per day for milling or grinding work.
The other company, the Shelly Co. of Twinsburg, bid $469,695 plus $3,600 per day for milling.
Milling is expected to take about 10 days.
What to do?
Both bids were higher than what the township had expected to spend. Larry Wilson, road superintendent, said the bids were not to exceed $400,000.
"This is the first time that we've opened bids that weren't within our specs," he said.
Wilson told trustees that he could subtract some of the streets set for resurfacing and advertise for bids again or the panel could authorize the additional money.
Robyn Gallitto, trustee chairwoman, said she'd rather see all of the streets on the list get paved.
Trustee Kathy Miller said she'd like it readvertised.
Gallitto said that timing is an issue because this is paving season. Trustee Elaine Mancini concurred.
The money to make up the difference will likely come from a township rainy-day fund, Gallitto said.
Which streets
The streets to be resurfaced are all of Flagler and Bluebird lanes; Valley View; Bonnell; Jaronte; Gardenwood and Creston drives; Lynn Mar and Irma avenues; Ranier Trail; Midwood Circle, Linger Place and portions of Loma Vista; Maple and Montrose avenues, Lakeshore, Millcreek, Spartan, Angiline, Garden View and Trotwood drives; Old Oxford and Tudor lanes; Forest Hill and Paxton roads; and Millcreek Boulevard.
