KSU alumni award given
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tony Roncone, who taught industrial arts at Cardinal Mooney High School for 46 years, has been awarded a Distinguished Alumni Award by Kent State University's School of Technology. Recipients for the award are selected based on their achievements in their professional careers. Roncone served as department chairman of the Industrial Arts and Art Department at Cardinal Mooney where he founded and advised the school's auto club, photography club and rifle team. He retired last year. Roncone founded and operated Roncone Photography for 35 years before he retired from that business. He holds the patent on seven special-effects camera lenses. He is also a professional musician and has recorded for Capital Records.
'Professor of the Year'
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Dr. Ralph Carlson, professor of mathematics at Grove City College, has been named Grove City's "Professor of the Year." Carlson, a 1962 graduate of Grove City, is in his second turn on the faculty. He first served as chairman of the department of mathematics from 1973-76, then as the college's vice president for business affairs. In 1979, he moved to a full-time position at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. He returned to Grove City College in 2000. He is advisor to Epsilon Pi fraternity and the Mortar Board senior honor society. In the research world, Carlson and two mathematics partners were issued a patent in 2004 for their work on a specific algorithm to help search electronic documents. The Professor of the Year was initiated in 2000 by the Omicron Delta Kappa campus leadership honorary and is sponsored by the Grove City College Alumni Association.

Classes include toddler time for those 2.5 years and older by Feb. 1, 2006; nursery for those age 3 by Sept. 1; and prekindergarten for those age 4 by Sept. 1. Students take 1st place
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Jameson School of Radiography students took first place in a recent Student Techni-Bowl and Jeopardy Game against other radiography students from nine other schools in western Pennsylvania and Ohio at LaRoche College in Pittsburgh. Jameson students won first prize in both events. Mark Arnold and Jill Rapone, both of New Castle, backed by alternate Stacy Winters, also of New Castle, won first place in the Techni-bowl competition. The winning team in the Jeopardy Game event included Winters; Lydia Kolehmainen of Enon Valley; Paul Saveat of New Middletown, Ohio; Julie Cataldi of Sharpsville; Sara Stockovich of Youngstown, Ohio; and Heather Thompson of New Castle.
Writing competition
BOARDMAN -- St. Charles School's seventh- and eighth-grade Power of the Pen teams took third- and fourth-place honors at the regional level of the educational writing competition held at Lake Middle School in Hartville, Ohio. The seventh-graders took first place and the eighth-graders took second place in the earlier district level competition, entitling them to move on to the regional event. The seventh and eighth grades' combined scores were the highest among the schools participating at regional, which earned them the sweepstakes trophy.
Ohio Miss Job's Daughter
WARREN -- Ashley Mann, a sophomore at John F. Kennedy High School, recently was crowned 2006-07 Ohio Miss Job's Daughter. Job's Daughters is an international Masonic youth organization for young women between the ages of 10 and 20 who are related to a Master Mason. The teachings of the order are based on the story of Job from the Bible and include fundamental lessons of patriotism, religion, respect for parents and guardians and leadership. The Ohio Miss Job's Daughter serves as the official representative for Job's Daughters throughout the state. In August, Ashley will travel to British Columbia, where she will compete for the title of Miss International Job's Daughter and as a member of the Ohio Messenger Team. Ashley is a member of the speech and softball teams and a member of the Political History and Science clubs at Kennedy. She has been a member of Bethel No. 35 International Order of Job's Daughters in Niles for the past four years.
Literacy grant awarded
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. Sandra Stephan, an English professor at Youngstown State University, and her team members have been awarded a $2,000 Literacy Grant by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi to help fund YSU's English Festival for high school and middle school pupils in 2007. About 1,000 pupils from 160 schools will attend the three-day event and participate in writing and language activities.
