Women's Hall of Fame
Margaret R. Svesko Bartoletti, formerly of Youngstown and director of the Rio Grande Safe Communities Coalition in Texas, was recently inducted into the 2006 El Paso, Texas, Women's Hall of Fame.
Bartoletti, a registered nurse, licensed chemical dependency counselor and substance abuse prevention specialist, graduated from Ursuline High School in 1957 and was a member of Sts. Peter & amp; Paul Catholic Church in Youngstown, where she attended grade school.
After her graduation in 1960 from St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing, Dayton, she returned to Youngstown, where she worked as an RN at St. Elizabeth and Woodside Receiving hospitals. She also worked at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Trumbull County for 10 years before moving to El Paso in 1980.
Bartoletti, and her two sons, Michael and William Shuttic, relocated to El Paso when her husband, Serene Bartoletti, was transferred to Delphi Packard Electric System's Mexican operations. Soon after her relocation, she began working at an alcohol and drug treatment program, during which time she became a licensed chemical dependency counselor and the program's head nurse. She has held her current position since January 2000, when she was hired as the coalition's first director.
The Rio Grand Safe Communities is a substance abuse prevention coalition.
Founders' Award
Germaine Bennett, former chairwoman of the board of trustees for Catholic Healthcare Partners' Humility of Mary Health Partners region in Youngstown, has received CHP's 2006 Founders' Award for Excellence in Governance Service. The award was presented at CHP's annual Governance Retreat & amp; Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The annual award recognizes a trustee who demonstrates understanding and commitment to CHP's mission and values.
Major projects approved under Bennett's board leadership include HMHP's new St. Elizabeth Boardman Campus Emergency and Diagnostic Center; construction of the new St. Elizabeth Boardman inpatient hospital, which is scheduled to open in 2007; major renovations to St. Elizabeth's operating rooms; major construction and renovations at St. Joseph Health Center's campus; and the opening of the St. Elizabeth Austintown Campus Emergency and Diagnostic Center.
In addition, Bennett began a partnership with the Youngstown City Schools whereby HMHP's mobile van visits the schools to vaccinate children, secure up-to-date immunization records, and make sure the children have no health obstacles to attending classes.
She serves as the school district's assistant superintendent of human resources/labor relations. Her career in education spans 35 years and includes serving as a classroom teacher and as a principal at several elementary schools. Bennett also received two awards from Leadership Mahoning Valley -- the Ohio Distinguished Leadership Award in 1998 and the Community Leadership Association Distinguished Leadership Award in 2003.
College of Trial Lawyers
Atty. Kevin R. McDermott, formerly of Canfield, and chairman of the Columbus law firm Schottenstein Zox & amp; Dun's litigation practice group, has been inducted as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
The ACTL is composed of the best of the trial bar from the United States and Canada. Fellowship in the college is extended by invitation only to those experienced trial lawyers whose legal careers have "been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality."
Lawyers must have a minimum of 15 years' trial experience before they may be considered.
McDermott has more than 28 years of experience resolving disputes in courts, administrative agencies, arbitration tribunals and mediations.
In addition to becoming a fellow, McDermott also has been featured as one of The Best Lawyers in America, has been named an Ohio Super Lawyer, was featured as an Ohio Lawyer of the Year in Ohio Lawyers Weekly and is a fellow of the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
McDermott is the son of Robert and Marion McDermott of Canfield and is a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Miami University and his law degree, cum laude, from Ohio State University.
DOCTORS
Medical degree
Eric P. Schaffert of Poland has received his doctor of medicine degree from Saba University School of Medicine, Netherlands, Antilles.
Dr. Schaffert did his obstetrics-gynocology rotation at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Ill., his psychiatric rotation at Cherry O'Berry Hospital in Goldsboro, N.C., his surgery rotation at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fla., his pediatrics rotation at Jackson Park Hospital, Chicago, and his internal medicine rotation at Forum Health in Youngstown.
A 2000 graduate of Youngstown State University and a 1994 graduate of Poland Seminary High School, Dr. Schaffert will begin residency in family practice at Forum Health in July.
He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric W. Schaffert of Harvest Run Trail, Poland, and the grandson of Elizabeth Repko and Pauline Schaffert.
Pharmacy degree
Pamela Grabert, formerly of Boardman, has received her doctor of pharmacy degree with high distinction from Ohio Northern University, Ada.
While at ONU, Dr. Grabert served as president of Kappa Episilon honorary sorority and was a member of the Mortar Board. The 2000 graduate of Boardman High school is the daughter of Steven and Christine Grabert of Boardman. Dr. Grabert lives in Columbus, where she is a staff pharmacist with Medco.

Spouses get doctorates
Cory Dunn, son of David and Lynn Dunn of Liberty, and his wife, Gulayse Ince Dunn, have attained their doctorate degrees from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore.
Cory Dunn received his doctorate in cell biology, while his wife received her doctorate in neuroscience. Cory Dunn previously received his bachelor's degree from the University of Toledo, where he graduated with college and departmental honors.
The Dunns will live in New York City, where Cory has accepted a position as a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University and where Gulayse will be a postdoctoral fellow at Rockefeller University.
LAWYERS
Passed bar
The law firm of Schiavoni, Schiavoni, Bush & amp; Muldowney Co., LPA, Austintown, announces that Joseph L. Schiavoni has recently passed the West Virginia State Bar exam. Atty. Schiavoni passed the Ohio State Bar exam in October 2005, and he will practice with the firm in both states.
He is the son of Atty. Louis and Joan Schiavoni, the grandson of David and Rosemary Keffler, Sophia Schiavone, and the late Atty. Joseph U. Schiavoni.
