WARREN -- The city school district awarded $40.6 million in contracts at its meeting Tuesday evening for construction of the new high school.
The contracts went to:
Mike Coates Construction for site work and masonry, $21.3 million.
Stonecreek Interior Systems for cabinets and other interior work, $1.1 million.
High Tech Pools Inc. for a swimming pool, $965,954.
Fire Foe Corporation, fire protection, $588,165.
WG Tomko Inc., plumbing, $2.65 million.
Antenucci Inc., heating and air conditioning, $5.8 million.
Valley Electrical Consolidated, electrical work, $8.2 million.
The board also awarded an insurance contract to Paige & amp; Byrnes Insurance Inc., which is affiliated with the Indiana Insurance Co., for $145,958. The insurance is for school property, vehicles and liability for the 2006-2007 school year.
The board also agreed to the purchase of a box truck for the maintenance department. The used vehicle purchased from Valley Truck Sales of Cleveland for $35,000 has 59,359 miles. The truck will replace a vehicle that was in need of $20,000 in repairs and had high mileage.
Silver medal
The school board also celebrated the silver medal won by Warren G. Harding High School's Delphi ELITE Robotics Team at the FIRST National Convention.
FIRST is an academic group that pairs middle and high school pupils with engineers so the pupils can learn technical expertise in scientific fields.
Superintendent Kathryn Hellweg gave each one of the pupils, teachers and Delphi engineers who participated in the program a certificate of appreciation.
The board also recognized a group of 2005 alumni who worked with the team. After the awards were handed out, the board and robotics team took a break to celebrate with cookies and lemonade.
The Harding team is known for more than their technical prowess, Hellweg said.
"Everywhere I go I hear how the robotics team supported fellow students in other schools," she said. "People will come up to me and say, 'Your robotics team is so phenomenal.'"
Board President Robert L. Faulkner Sr. said the meaning of the ELITE acronym -- Encouraging Learning In Technology and Engineering -- went well with the team's attitude and accomplishments.
"As long as I'm on the Warren City School Board we're going to do all we can to support you," he said to the team members.
