MLB ROUNDUP | Tuesday's other games
Yankees 2, Red Sox 1
NEW YORK -- Melky Cabrera robbed Manny Ramirez of a tying homer with a leaping catch in the eighth inning and the Yankees edged Boston behind a strong start from Chien-Ming Wang. Bernie Williams homered and Jason Giambi drew a bases-loaded walk to break a seventh-inning tie for New York, which played without ailing captain Derek Jeter (bruised right thumb) for the second consecutive night. The first-place Yankees (35-22) have won the first two meetings of a four-game series to move 11/2 games in front of Boston in the AL East. They won for the ninth time in 11 games overall and moved a season-high 13 games above .500. Wang (6-2) gave up only a solo homer to David Ortiz in seven innings. The right-hander was locked in a pitchers' duel with David Pauley (0-1), who was making his second major league start, when the Yankees came to bat in the seventh. Pauley retired the first two hitters, but New York loaded the bases on singles by Miguel Cairo and Johnny Damon and a four-pitch walk to Cabrera. With no left-handers in the Boston bullpen, right-hander Rudy Seanez relieved Pauley to face the lefty-swinging Giambi. The count stretched to 3-2 and then Seanez threw ball four, forcing in the go-ahead run. Cabrera preserved the lead when he leaped at the 399-foot sign in left-center to rob Ramirez of a homer off Kyle Farnsworth. Mariano Rivera worked a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances. His 391st save moved him ahead of Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley into sole possession of fourth place on the career list.
Angels 12, Devil Rays 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Ervin Santana allowed two hits in seven innings and Vladimir Guerrero drove in two runs with a pair of singles, leading the Los Angeles Angels. Santana (5-3) outperformed left-hander Scott Kazmir (7-4) in a matchup of two of the best young pitchers in the American League, with the Angels turning a close game into a rout with a pair of runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Jose Molina went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and scored three runs for Los Angeles, which finished with a season-high 17 hits. Guerrero had RBI singles in the first and sixth. Juan Rivera's seventh-inning single off reliever Travis Harper drove in the last two runs charged to Kazmir, who allowed seven runs and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings. Santana limited the Devil Rays to one hit -- Carl Crawford's first-inning triple -- until Julio Lugo singled with one out in the sixth.
Blue Jays 6, Orioles 4
BALTIMORE -- Alex Rios snapped a tie with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, and Aaron Hill had two RBIs to lift the Toronto Blue Jays. Rios went 2-for-5 to raise his AL-leading batting average to .359. His homer came off rookie Chris Britton (0-1) after Reed Johnson led off the seventh with a walk. Kevin Millar hit an RBI single off Justin Speier to bring Baltimore to 5-4 in the bottom half, but Toronto added a run in the eighth when Gregg Zaun doubled and scored on sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Lyle Overbay. Former Oriole B.J. Ryan worked the ninth for his 14th save in 15 chances. Reliever Scott Downs (1-0) got the win.
Rangers 6, Royals 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo.-- Brad Wilkerson hit a home run and doubled for Texas. The Royals have lost eight straight at home. Texas started the scoring in the second on Wilkerson's 12th home run of the season, a 412-foot shot to center. Texas now has hit home runs in 44 of 57 games played this season.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Braves 5, Nationals 3
ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves finally earned their first win of the month as Horacio Ramirez threw eight strong innings to beat Washington. The Braves ended a five-game losing streak -- all at home -- and avoided matching their six-game home skid Aug. 8-21, 2001, their longest at Turner Field. Adam LaRoche hit his 10th homer in the third inning and Andruw Jones padded the lead with his 15th homer in the eighth inning. Alfonso Soriano hit his 22nd homer for Washington, a two-run shot.
Brewers 5, Padres 1
MILWAUKEE -- Dave Bush pitched a three-hitter and Geoff Jenkins went 4-for-4 to help Milwaukee beat San Diego. Jenkins, who suffered a mild concussion Sunday during a collision with teammate Prince Fielder, snapped an 0-for-15 slump with four singles. Rickie Weeks had three base hits to break out of a 1-for-22 skid and Corey Koskie hit a solo home run for Milwaukee.
Astros 4, Cubs 1
HOUSTON -- Wandy Rodriguez threw seven shutout innings and Lance Berkman homered, leading Houston past Chicago for the Astros first victory since re-signing Roger Clemens. Chris Burke drove in two runs as Houston broke a five-game losing streak, rebounding after getting only one hit in an 8-0 loss to the Cubs on Monday. Pitching on three days' rest because Roy Oswalt is injured, Rodriguez (7-3) allowed five hits, struck out one and walked three in one of his best outings this season.
Reds 7, Cardinals 0
ST. LOUIS -- Eric Milton threw seven sharp innings and Cincinnati got homers from Felipe Lopez and Adam Dunn, winning their sixth straight game. Lopez hit his sixth homer in the first off Chris Carpenter for a two-day cycle after hitting a double, triple and single in his last three at-bats on Monday. The Reds matched their season-best winning streak while slicing the Cardinals' NL Central lead to one game. St. Louis has lost four of five overall. Scott Rolen had two hits for the Cardinals, who are 1-2 since Albert Pujols went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle on his right side.
