HUBBARD -- Gary Gilmartin lent his legal expertise to three communities, but for some, it is his strength of person that will be most remembered.
The 56-year-old attorney died Sunday of complications after a recent heart transplant. He served as law director for Hubbard and associate prosecutor for Girard and had a private law practice in Youngstown.
Gilmartin was a member of the Mahoning County Bar Association, Knights of Columbus, Council 2935 in Girard, and Hubbard Gridiron Club.
In the last several weeks, Gilmartin received a new heart at Cleveland Clinic. He had spent an extended time in the hospital before the surgery.
Mayor Arthur Magee said Gilmartin had been battling a life-threatening illness for several years, but his personal struggle never showed in his daily interactions with those around him. Magee recalls visiting Gilmartin in the hospital before the heart surgery. He said Gilmartin's overall attitude was "like he was there to have his teeth cleaned instead of a heart transplant."
Gilmartin's demeanor
"Gary was a happy-go-lucky kind of person who didn't seem to worry about anything," he said. "He always took things in stride and made the best of it. He took life and made the best of it."
Magee said Gilmartin never complained about anything.
Councilman Patton Gilliland said Gilmartin's pleasant demeanor and upbeat attitude would also show in his professional life. He said Gilmartin always treated those with whom he interacted fairly and was always willing to offer sound legal assistance.
"Gary was a fine man. He was always willing to sit, listen and give you the best advice possible," he said. "He was a nice guy, a straight shooter. I had a lot of respect for him."
Gilmartin's funeral will be Thursday at St. Rose Church in Girard.
