Authorities probe fire at golf course

The loss is expected to exceed $100,000.
COITSVILLE -- The cause of a fire that gutted a storage building at Bedford Trails Public Golf Course on Monday night was still under investigation Tuesday, Fire Chief Nick Pope Jr. said.
Pope said the blaze, reported by golf course employees at about 10:30 p.m., destroyed the contents of the 30-by-50-foot sheet metal pole building. The chief estimated losses would exceed $100,000, including some $20,000 worth of fertilizer and pesticides used to maintain the courses fairways and greens.
Pope said when it was determined that the contents of the building, which did not have any utilities, could not be saved, firefighters discontinued spraying water on the fire so as not to let it spread further to the fertilizer and pesticides.
The storage building, located in a wooded area in the middle of the 150-acre golf course near hole No. 9, will be rebuilt, said the owner, Thomas Grischow.
Grischow said the building contained equipment, such as mowers and other supplies used for course maintenance. The golf course was open for business Tuesday.
The Coitsville Fire Department was assisted by units from the Pulaski, Pa., Fire Department and the Western Reserve Joint Fire District.
