Top Democratic spots
There was no change in leadership for the Trumbull County Democratic Party, but two people were elected to top spots in the Mahoning County Democratic Party on Monday. In Trumbull, no person ran in opposition to chairman Christ Michelakis, vice chairman Ralph Infante, or secretary Barbara Katzenberger, so all will serve another four-year term. The meeting was at DiVieste's Banquet Hall, Warren. In Mahoning, Democrats selected Jaladah Aslam of Austintown as executive vice chairwoman for labor relations. She defeated two other candidates. Atty. Mark Belinky was selected as party secretary. Those positions are also for four years. The Mahoning meeting was at Byzantine Center at the Grove on Shady Run Road, Youngstown.
Felasco hearing delayed
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The preliminary hearing for Lawrence County Treasurer Gary Felasco has been postponed to July 19. Felasco, 39, was to appear Thursday in Lawrence County Central Court on theft charges. He is accused of taking $6,100 from the National Association of Wolves Club, where he served as treasurer. Court officials said Felasco's attorney asked for the delay. In addition to this court date, Felasco also is awaiting his Aug. 1 sentencing in Franklin, Pa. He was found guilty in May of theft and embezzlement after a jury trial. In that matter, he was accused of taking more than $40,000 from the treasurer's office for personal use.
Weapons charge
BOARDMAN -- Police charged a 26-year-old Poland man with carrying a concealed weapon after a loaded handgun and folding pocket knife were found in his car. Matthew J. Chachko of Tara Drive was released after posting bond and is to appear today in Mahoning County Court to face the felony charge.
An officer got behind the car driven by Chachko, which had a cracked windshield, and saw the driver making "furtive movements," the police report says. The officer stopped the car on Market Street, and Chachko appeared nervous, the report said. He told police there was nothing illegal in the car and consented to a search. Police found the knife under the driver's seat and the gun wrapped in a sweat shirt on the front passenger seat.
Gunshot wound
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police took a report Sunday from a man treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for a gunshot wound to the buttocks. He told police he was walking out of a gas station in the 2600 block of Glenwood Avenue when he heard some men arguing outside and then heard gunshots. He fled on foot to his home nearby and discovered he had been hit. His wound was not serious.
Crash kills woman, 82
SANDY LAKE, Pa. -- A Latham Road woman died after a two-car crash at Walnut Street and Pa. Route 62. Coroner J. Bradley McGonigle III pronounced Marian Prenatt, 82, dead at 11:10 a.m. Sunday of internal injuries suffered in the crash. Her daughter, Joan M. Watson, 50, of Greenville was driving when her car was struck broadside by a pickup truck traveling west on Pa. Route 62 at 9:58 a.m. Sunday, Pennsylvania State Police in Mercer said. James Jerome Garland II, 23, of Sandy Lake was driving the truck. State police said Watson and Garland were both injured, but they gave no details about their injuries or treatment.
Scrap tire collection
HOWLAND -- Howland is having a Scrap Tire Drop-Off for Township residents only this week. Residents may drop off a maximum of eight passenger tires with no rims from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday and June 12-16 at the Public Works Department on 3600 North River Road. Sobriety checkpoint
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Fifty-eight vehicles were stopped as part of a sobriety checkpoint and roving driving under the influence patrol this past weekend. Hermitage police and Pennsylvania State Police made five driving under the influence arrests, one arrest for fleeing and eluding police, issued 23 traffic citations and 40 written warnings. Police said one person was arrested for underage consumption and another for disorderly conduct.
