HUBBARD -- The Hubbard Board of Education asked for public input on the rehiring of two retired teachers. They received feedback, but no one had anything negative to say.
Dennis Mathews, an advanced math teacher, and Daniel Gill, a science teacher, both retired earlier this year after years of service to the district. Board members are considering rehiring both teachers to continue in those same positions. Their salaries would be spelled out in their contracts.
Silence filled the meeting room Monday night when board members asked if there were any objections or disapproval to the potential rehiring of either teacher. There was, however, plenty of applause and support for the move.
Tammy Newell, a former Hubbard student and now a first-grade teacher, told board members she had both teachers for classes while attending high school. She said they made attending class fun and are good teachers who deserve to be rehired.
"I think it would be very hard to fill their positions," she said. "They are very qualified and deserve to be rehired."
Ronald Garrett, assistant principal at the high school, said that replacing either teacher would be difficult. He said both teachers are doing the district a favor by staying on to teach.
Superintendent Richard Buchenic said he will recommend to the board that both teachers be rehired. Board members will make a decision at a future meeting.
Board members also:
Moved Raymond Solomon from assistant principal to principal at Roosevelt Elementary School.
Appointed Robyn Fette assistant principal at Roosevelt Elementary School.
Moved Ronald Garret from assistant principal to principal at Hubbard High School.
Tabled a four-year contract agreement for Treasurer Blaise Karlovic.
Accepted the district's five-year forecast.
