SHARON, Pa. -- Firefighters are working to determine the cause of a fire Sunday at 349 Mesabi St. The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived just after 6 a.m. Firefighters were unable to determine where the blaze started. Reports said the owner, Joe Toth, was having the house renovated but wasn't living in it.
Driver hospitalized
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lonnie Dallas III, 47, of Youngstown was in serious condition Sunday at St. Elizabeth Health Center after being injured in a car crash Saturday in Hubbard Township. The state highway patrol said Dallas hit the back of a pickup truck on state Route 62, crossed the median strip in an attempt to leave the scene and then hit a tractor-trailer.
Report: Water's potable
YOUNGSTOWN -- No violations of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act of 1996 were found in water sold to Youngstown customers. Copies of the Consumer Confidence Report recently mailed to customers informs them on what's in their drinking water. The city buys water from the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District, of which Youngstown and Niles are member cities, and then sells it to residents of Youngstown, Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, Liberty, Mineral Ridge, Girard and North Jackson.
Kids carnival planned
AUSTINTOWN -- Pony rides, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, entertainment, food and family fun will be on tap when the Salvation Army, 6431 Mahoning Ave., has its first children's carnival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 29 at the Salvation Army site. Tickets, which will be sold for five for $1, also will be distributed to income-eligible families and through the food pantry. Tickets will be good for games and food. There also will be many free activities, prizes and a clothing giveaway. Community groups, churches and businesses are asked to participate through financial contributions and donations of prizes for children. Contact Capt. Cops and doughnuts
AUSTINTOWN -- Police officers from around the area will gather in the Austintown Middle School parking lot at 11 a.m. Saturday for a doughnut-eating contest to raise money for the Mahoning County Drug Abuse Resistance Education program. Officers will receive pledges for each donut they can eat in a 5-minute period. Pupils will also participate in their own doughnut-eating competition; prizes and awards will be given to the winners.
First Night plans picnic
YOUNGSTOWN -- First Night Youngstown will have a picnic from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Wick Park Pavilion on Park Avenue to thank all of the sponsors and volunteers for their help with this year's event.
