GREENFORD -- Green Township trustees will have a tire collection drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 17 at Green Township Recycling site, behind the fire station. This collection is open to everyone.
The cost is as follows: 16-inch tire or smaller, no charge (no businesses); 16-inch tire on a rim, 25 cents per tire; tires larger than 16 inches, $5 per tire; tires larger than 16 inches on a rim, $6.50 per tire.
DUI stop a success
NESHANNOCK, Pa. -- State Police from New Castle and Neshannock police made a drug arrest, two DUI arrests, and four traffic citations and issued 26 vehicle code violation warnings in a joint DUI patrol. Twenty-five vehicles were stopped in and near Neshannock Township, Lawrence County, between 11 p.m. Friday and 4 a.m. Saturday.
Fireworks festival
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Organizers of the 18th Annual Fireworks Festival are still accepting vendors for this year's event. The festival is set for 3 to 10 p.m. July 8 in downtown New Castle. July 9 is the rain date. There are free arts and crafts for the children as well as live entertainment. On the main stage there will be three bands and an "Idol" competition. There will be ethnic and American foods for sale. The American Cancer Society will have its Ducky Derby at 7:30 p.m., and the fireworks show by Zambelli International is set for 10 p.m. Call Contact Ears at (724) 658-5529 for more information.
Conti remains
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners will have to wait another month in their efforts to oust Donald Conti from the Lawrence County Housing Authority. A hearing on the matter set for last Thursday was rescheduled by Lawrence County Common Pleas Court to 11 a.m. July 31. The hearing date was changed due to a scheduling conflict with Judge J. Craig Cox. Commissioners are asking the courts to remove Conti, also known as Ducky, from the housing authority after he pleaded guilty to a gambling charge earlier this year.
Baby-sitting course
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Red Cross will have a "Babysitter's Training Course" from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Red Cross office, 661 Mahoning Ave. The interactive course teaches first aid and safety skills to prevent and respond to emergencies. The class will also train participants to handle basic childcare such as diapering, feeding and dressing.
Cost for the class is $40, which includes a first aid kit, a baby-sitter's handbook and a backpack. Participants are asked to bring a sack lunch for both days. For more information or to register, call the Red Cross Office at (330) 392-2551.
