Scholarship program announced
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- A new scholarship program aimed at students from Ohio has been announced at Thiel College.
The Office of Educational Outreach said funding will come from The Marion G. Resch Foundation of Youngstown.
The new scholarship program will be known as The Marion G. Resch Science Scholarship, and awards of $5,000 each will be offered to three men and three women from the Mahoning Valley who meet certain scholarship requirements and desire to enter a four-year degree program in biology, chemistry, environmental science or physics.
"Our institutional research confirmed what other high schools and colleges are finding -- that there have been decreasing numbers of young women entering the natural and physical sciences," said John Rindy, Thiel College dean of educational outreach and author of the scholarship. "The Resch Foundation and Thiel hope to make an impact on that statistic, at least in the tri-county area."
Advocate
The late Mrs. Resch was an advocate of the education of young people, and The Resch Foundation, managed by Butler-Wick Trust Co. of Youngstown, honors her legacy by granting money in support of scholarships and early intervention programs for students in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
Students who are interested in the scholarship program can contact Cori Bloom, Thiel's Ohio admissions representative, at (800) 248-4435, Ext. 2259, or visit the scholarship Web site at www.thiel.edu/admissions/resch-scholarship.htm.
