National Guardsman suesover scene in 'Fahrenheit'
A Massachusetts National Guardsman who lost both arms in the Iraq war is suing Michael Moore for $85 million over a scene in the filmmaker's scathing, stridently antiwar 2004 movie, "Fahrenheit 9/11."
Sgt. Peter Damon's lawsuit claims the filmmaker used fragments of an interview Damon did with NBC's "Nightly News" without his permission -- "and edited the clip to make him sound as if he were voicing a complaint about the war effort."
Damon, who says he "agrees with and supports the president and the United States' war effort," seeks damages because of "loss of reputation, emotional distress, embarrassment and personal humiliation." Moore's representatives have yet to comment.
Winfrey pays a visitto Navajo Nation
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. -- Oprah Winfrey visited the Navajo Nation recently to gather footage for an upcoming episode of her show, tribal officials said.
Winfrey toured the Navajo capital of Window Rock and watched children perform a powwow dance, according to a statement released by the tribe.
"It was a real honor to have such a celebrity grace us with her presence, especially on sacred ground right under the Window Rock," Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. said. "She's a very likable person, of course, very honorable."
The Window Rock is a geographic feature that gave the community its name.
Priscella Littlefoot, the To'Nanees' Dizi Chapter coordinator who organized the event, said in the statement that "Oprah is our key to let the world in."
"Hopefully, Oprah's visit will portray that while we do have social problems, we're still rich in our heritage, our culture and language," she said.
Green finds new respectfor power of the ocean
DENVER -- Former MTV talk-show host Tom Green said an accident near his house in Costa Rica has made him more respectful of the ocean.
Green, who was in Costa Rica this week collecting video for a new project, said he was fishing alone two months ago when a violent wave slammed him into a rock. He said he hit his head, broke two ribs and stumbled back to his house before driving to a hospital about two hours away by dirt roads.
He apparently shocked the cleaning lady.
"I was covered in blood, hardly alive. I walked past the cleaning lady. She looked at me like she was looking at a dead person," he told The Associated Press by phone Thursday. "I just walked into my shower."
A day earlier, the waves pulled him "14 football fields" out into the ocean while surfing, he said.
"It took me an hour to get back into shore, and I said, 'I'm never gonna be that risky with that ocean again. I'll just go fishing.' The next day I got nailed."
Green, 34, recently finished directing an upcoming movie, "Prankstar." He was the host of "The Tom Green Show" and "The New Tom Green Show" on MTV, and his acting credits include roles in "Stealing Harvard," "Freddy Got Fingered" and "Road Trip."
At airport, authoritiessearch rocker for drugs
BARCELONA, Spain -- Pete Doherty was searched for drugs at a Barcelona airport, but was cleared to proceed after no drugs were found on his flight from London, authorities said.
Doherty, 27, and his band, Babyshambles, were on a flight Thursday to Barcelona from Gatwick airport, easyJet spokeswoman Samantha Day said in London. The captain radioed ahead to ask police to meet the plane at El Prat airport after noticing suspicious behavior by Doherty, she said.
"The captain asked for a police presence because a passenger was taking too much time in the bathroom and he suspected that he might be taking drugs," Javier Gaspar, a civil guard spokesman in Barcelona, told The Associated Press.
The airline said a syringe had been found in the bathroom, but Gaspar said: "We have found no syringe, nor any illegal substances."
Doherty was apparently traveling to the Primavera Sound Festival. He was released without charge but Doherty and his band have been banned from flying on easyJet, Day said.
The troubled British rocker has a history of arrests for suspected drug use. He gained international attention last year after a London newspaper published pictures of then-girlfriend Kate Moss reportedly taking cocaine at a music studio where Doherty and Babyshambles were recording.
