DELAWARE -- Michael Krieger, a senior right-handed pitcher for the Ohio Wesleyan University baseball team from Boardman High, has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV first team.
Krieger, who posted a 6-2 record and 3.92 earned run average, achieved a 3.26 grade-point average as a journalism major. He already has graduated.
He also was named to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference team for the third straight year, selected to the second team after making the first team in 2005 and the second team in 2004.
Krieger helped Ohio Wesleyan to a 26-14 record and the NCAC West Division title with a 13-3 record. The Bishops advanced to the finals of the NCAC tournament where they were eliminated in the last two games by the College of Wooster.
For Krieger's career, he compiled a 21-10 record in 2391/3 innings pitched with a 4.51 ERA, five saves, 183 strikeouts and 75 walks. He ranks No. 5 at the school in game starts (35), is tied for No. 5 in shutouts (3) and ranks No. 6 in innings pitched (2391/3).
Westminster set for tour
NEW WILMINGTON -- The Westminster College basketball team will take a basketball tour to the nation of Belize in Central America from June 22 to July 3.
The Titans will play five games against Belize professional teams in the capital city of Belize City.
The trip is being coordinated by coach Larry Ondako and Kevin Siroki, a former Westminster player and assistant coach and a native of Niles, who now lives in Belize and coaches the Belize National team.
Three former Westminster players -- Andy Wormsley, Chad Phillips (Warren JFK) and Greg Foster (Rayen) -- have played professional basketball in Belize.
This is not Westminster's first trip abroad.
The Titans joined Grambling on a State Department-sponsored tour of South America in 1962, and also played a three-game tour in France in 1995.
There will be 15 players making the trip, seven of them from the Youngstown area, including Chauncey Whitlow, a junior guard from Woodrow Wilson; and Jake Zatchok, a junior forward from Western Reserve. Whitlow was the team's fourth-leading scorer last season with a 10.5-point average.
The others are Dom Joseph, senior forward, and David Richards, sophomore guard, both from New Castle High; Bobby Preston, junior guard, and Mike Kobal, sophomore forward, both from Neshannock; and Craig Hannon, junior guard from Union. Hannon ranked No. 2 in scoring last season (19.9).
Jones is All-American
CANTON -- Scotty Jones, a junior golfer for Malone College from East Palestine High, earned NAIA All-American honors as he led the Pioneers to ninth place at the 55th annual NAIA National Golf Championships held May 16-19 in Olathe, Kan.
Jones, who had rounds of 73, 78, 70 and 75 for a four-day score of 296 (8 over par) to place 19th, made the Golf Coaches Association of America NAIA All-American second team.
He became only the 10th Malone player to made NAIA-All-American.
Malone had a score of 1,201. The champion was Oklahoma City with 1,154.
Naumoff top hitter
MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Katie Naumoff, a junior second baseman for the Florida Tech softball team from Poland High, wound up the season as the team's leading hitter with a .409 (63-for-154) batting average.
She also led the Panthers in hits (63) and doubles (12) and tied for first in runs scored with 38, helping the team to a 31-16 record, including 15-9 in the Sunshine State Conference. She also had 30 RBIs.
