Howland native wins University Professor award
ATHENS -- Dr. Linda J. Rice, formerly of Howland, has earned a University Professor award at Ohio University this year.
Since its establishment in 1970, the University Professor award has been an important way for students to acknowledge outstanding faculty members. Of nearly 1,000 full-time faculty on the Athens campus, only five are awarded this distinction annually.
Rice, an assistant professor in the English department, completed her doctorate in curriculum and instruction at Kent State University in 2002 before moving to Athens to work for Ohio University. She also holds a master's from Kent and a bachelor's degree from Grove City (Pa.) College.
After professors are nominated for the UP award, a student committee representing multiple majors conducts interviews and class observations throughout the winter quarter before selecting the winners. Each University Professor receives $2,000 and the opportunity to teach two classes on a subject of his or her choosing.
Rice, a former Lakeview High School English teacher, has also written a book titled "What Was It Like? Teaching History and Culture through Young Adult Literature." The book, published by Teachers College Press, Columbia University is due out this month.
