CAMPUS NOTES In the spotlight
SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY
Marlana LaCivita, a sophomore dance major at Slippery Rock University, recently made her New York debut dance performance with Slippery Rock's University Dance Theater at Hunter College at Central Park. She was also recently chosen to dance a solo at the American College Dance Festival Adjudication at Ohio State University, her second annual appearance at that event. She has been a dancer and singer with Easy Street Productions in Youngstown and a lead dancer with the Great Lakes Festival Ballet in Warren. The 2002 graduate of Liberty High School is the daughter of Marie and Robert LaCivita of Liberty.
MOUNT UNION COLLEGE, ALLIANCE, OHIO
Katy Kiraly of McDonald, a sophomore media studies major; Jenny Singleton of Poland, a sophomore biochemistry major; Diane C. Snyder of Boardman, a sophomore athletic training major; and Sarah Loudon of Salem, a junior exercise major, were recipients of scholarships from the National Cabinet of Mount Union Women. Area residents received honors during the annual Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation. Gina L. Donald of Youngstown was named recipient of the Robert E. Hillier Family Scholarship; Anthony Jones of Youngstown was named recipient of the Black Student Union Service Award; Thomas A. Manning of Youngstown and Ross T. Watson of Canfield were named recipients of the Ken Wable Prize; and William L. Bartos of Poland was named recipient of the Political Science Award. Beatrice B. Petzinger of Poland was named recipient of the Cecil T. and Marian H. Stewart Award and the George L. and Margaret Wagner King Prize for the Performing Arts.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY
Maria Badescu of Youngstown has been awarded a $1,000 Chick-Fil-A's Leadership Scholarship. She is using the money to continue her respiratory care studies. Badescu is the 13th scholarship winner from the Chick-Fil-A restaurant in Boardman, where she works.
DENISON UNIVERSITY, GRANVILLE, OHIO
James Slaven, son of Emily Slaven of Poland and the late Michael R. Slaven, has been inducted into Phi Alpha Theta, the international history honorary society. Slaven, a 2002 Poland Seminary High School graduate, is a senior economics major at Denison.
MIAMI UNIVERSITY, OXFORD, OHIO
Patrick E. Alexander of Youngstown and Vanessa Schutz of Canfield have been inducted into the Iota Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Alexander is an English and creative writing major. Schutz is an English and journalism major.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE, LAKELAND, FLA.
Two local students earned honors at the annual college Honors Convocation. Andrew R. Flowers, son of Gary and Jonine Flowers of Sharpsville, Pa., and a senior criminology major, earned the Dick Burnette Criminology Award. Nathan Jordan, son of Thomas and Audrey Jordan of Canfield and a junior recreational turfgrass management major, was awarded both the Jack Harrell Sr. Scholarship and the Ben Hill Griffin Merit Scholarship. Jordan was also awarded the Outstanding Recreational Turfgrass Management Major Award and the C. Jeffery Wiley Memorial Scholarship.
