STRUTHERS -- Police were busy Wednesday taking 17 reports of thefts from cars that occurred Tuesday night. Residents of Creed, Iroquois and Wilson streets, Poland Avenue and Hopewell Drive reported that parked vehicles were entered but not damaged. The reports listed the vehicles as unlocked.
Among items stolen were change, an electric guitar, telephone earpiece, compact disc players and CDs, a wallet, a fishing knife, a credit card, a radar detector, stereo and speakers and a vehicle registration.
Woman reports assault
GIRARD -- Police are investigating an assault on a woman just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Laundry Basket Laundromat on Broadway Avenue. The 25-year-old city woman told police she was loading clothes into her car outside the business when confronted by a large man. The man shoved her against the car, but she managed to kick him in the groin -- sending him to the ground in pain. Reports said the woman went home then to the police station to file a report.
Stolen purse found
LIBERTY -- A 30-year-old Golden Hunan Restaurant employee told police her purse was taken while she was attempting to enter the restaurant Wednesday afternoon. A police report said the woman was entering the business as three men in their early 20s were leaving. One of the men grabbed her purse and ran. Two employees from a nearby oil change business followed the thief, and the two men with him, into the Oaktree Apartments parking lot. Police recovered the purse with all contents inside behind a nearby store.
Car hit by bullets
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are investigating a shooting on the East Side. According to reports, a 34-year-old Plazaview Court man was driving down Lansdowne Boulevard on Wednesday morning when a car pulled alongside him and someone opened fire. The man was not hit, but bullets hit his car. The shooter sped off, and the man drove home and called police.
Fires found to be arson
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire at 304 E. Lucius Ave. at 3:30 a.m. Thursday was deliberately set, the fire department said. Damage to the large vacant 21/2-story South Side house was estimated at $20,000, a total loss. Firefighters found heavy fire on the first floor. The fire rekindled at 9:20 a.m. Thursday. Mahoning County records show the nine-room house was built in 1898. It was sold for a tax lien in 2000. Earlier, at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters were sent to 66 Baldwin St. on the North Side, another vacant house. Firefighters said rags and trash were set on fire and a passer-by saw a man jump from a window after setting the fire. No damage estimate was given. A request for demolition was filed. Records show the house was built in 1902 and sold for tax lien in 2001.
Marijuana charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested a Brookline Avenue man Wednesday after they said they found suspected marijuana in his car. Police went to a residence in the 900 block of Lakewood Avenue on a warrant for another suspect when they noticed a small bag of suspected marijuana in the cup holder of a car parked in the driveway.
Police said more than two pounds of suspected marijuana were found in the vehicle and an additional pound was found inside the residence. The car's owner, Marcus Rutledge, 20, was arrested. He was arraigned on two felony counts of possession of marijuana and one charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $14,000.
Stolen Hummer2 found
YOUNGSTOWN -- A stolen Hummer2 was found on Truesdale Avenue after its On Star system located the vehicle in the area. Witnesses told police the suspects parked the vehicle in a garage and then went to a residence on Hawn Avenue. Lamar Hough, 18, of Truesdale Avenue and Melvin Howard, 21, were found at the residence and placed under arrest on a charge of receiving stolen property.
Cottage burns
CRAIG BEACH -- The cause of a fire at 17545 Olive St., a vacant one-story cottage that had been condemned, remains under investigation, said Craig Beach Fire Chief Kevin Felger. Fire departments from Ellsworth, Milton and Jackson townships responded to the Wednesday evening fire. Felger had no damage estimate but said the loss was total.
