Canfield takes MAC title with 10-0 win



The Cardinals blanked Salem to snap Poland's 19-year reign in the MAC.
CANFIELD -- Sophomore Lauren Sulick had a grand slam in the fourth inning and pitched a two-hitter to lead the Canfield High softball team over Salem, 10-0, Thursday to give the Cardinals the outright Metro Athletic Conference title.
Sulick had 12 strikeouts. At bat, she accounted for five RBIs.
Ashley Bleggi had two hits, including a double for the Cardinals.
Canfield (27-4) captured the league crown with a 13-1 record. The Cards' lone loss was to Poland, 1-0, but Canfield beat the Bulldogs in the rematch, 5-2. Poland ended 12-2 in the loop.
The Cardinals snapped Poland's 19-year streak of winning outright or tying for first place.
Division I tournament
ASHLAND -- Abbey Lindeman drove in two runs in the sixth inning to lead North Canton Hoover over West Chester Lakota West 4-0 in the state semifinals.
Hoover's Jess Simpson (27-2) gave up only one hit and struck out 11.
Lindeman's hit scored Felicia Houtz and Amanda Close, who had advanced to second and third on shortstop Lamara Parker's throwing error.
All four runs were unearned as Lakota West (28-4) committed two errors in the sixth inning.
Lindsay Bodecker (26-4) allowed four hits in six innings for Lakota West.
Hoover (30-2) takes on Elyria in Saturday's championship.
Elyria 6, Hamilton 0
ASHLAND -- Megan Bashak pitched a three-hitter and hit an RBI triple in Elyria's (28-5) win.
Bashak (17-2) struck out nine and walked two. She allowed one hit, a third-inning single by Susan Wendland, before giving up consecutive singles in the seventh to Amanda Weisenberger and Jennifer McKee.
Andrea Stolarski had an RBI double off Jennifer McKee (23-7) and Kristin Sito, Tess Sito and Jessica Mandula each drove in a run for Elyria.
Division II tournament
ASHLAND -- Kristie Malinkey pitched a five-hit shutout and Jessica Burt drove in two runs and scored twice to lead LaGrange Keystone over Ashtabula Edgewood 5-0 in a Div. II state semifinal.
Malinkey (25-0) struck out 14 and walked two for Keystone (32-2). She also scored a run.
Circleville 2, Urbana 1
ASHLAND -- Jill Truex singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Circleville over Urbana.
Truex's hit scored Racheal Spangler, who reached first base on an error by Urbana pitcher Tara West.
Both the runs West (23-4) allowed were unearned. Truex reached on an error in the fourth inning and scored on Alexis Goode's single for Circleville (23-8).
Baseball
COLUMBUS -- The Div. IV semifinal games Thursday pitting Kalida against Newark Catholic and Tipp City Bethel against Windham were postponed due to weather.
The games were rescheduled for today at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
