15-year-old boy shot,is in critical condition
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 15-year-old boy was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center after he was shot in the stomach on West Ravenwood Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday.
Police said the youth was in critical condition. A hospital spokesperson said she had no information on his condition.
Police at the scene at 225 W. Ravenwood Ave. said the shooting may have been accidental. Police recovered a small-caliber semi-automatic handgun at the house.
Detectives were called to interview people who had been at the house at the time of the shooting.
Man taken to hospital after assault by 2 men
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man was taken to Forum Health Northside Medical Center after he was assaulted by two men at 3:56 a.m. Sunday.
Theodore Ward, 24, of Brownlee Avenue, said two men beat him on the head with handguns and one man fired a gun into his bed. Police found a .45-caliber shell casing in the bedroom. The man and his girlfriend said the men, including one they know, broke in and began beating Ward.
A nursing supervisor could not be reached to report on Ward's condition.
YPD Youth Academy
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kids interested in enrolling in the Youngstown Police Department Youth Academy should contact Detective Sgt. Delphine Baldwin Casey of the planning and training division at (330) 743-2021 or (330) 743-2156.
Classes begin Thursday and will meet every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the old fire station at 1639 Mahoning Ave., now called the Youngstown Community Education Center.
Those interested in the YPD Citizens' Police Academy, which begins in September, should also contact Casey.
Free community picnic
STRUTHERS -- Fellowship Church Food Pantry, 115 Frank St., will have a free community picnic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Yellow Creek Park.
The church operates a food pantry at its location, where a food giveaway is at 1 p.m. the third Thursday of each month.
The church also assists families who need help paying utility bills, buying gasoline and maintaining vehicles.
Monetary donations may be made out to Fellowship Church Food Pantry and sent to the church at 115 Frank St., P.O. Box 75, Struthers, Ohio 44471.
Donations also may be sent to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, 2805 Salt Springs Road, Youngstown, Ohio 44509, and labeled for the Fellowship Church account.
Warren park upgraded
WARREN -- The city recently installed new outdoor furniture in the south section of the Monument/Log Cabin Park for residents and visitors. Six tables, 20 chairs, two benches and a bicycle rack were provided.
"This is the continuation of the ongoing downtown enhancement and will enable residents to enjoy a relaxing view of the river," Mayor Michael J. O'Brien said.
The furniture and installation cost $18,000.
