Activities planned this month at Mill Creek MetroParks facilities:
Tuesday: Health and wellness walks at 6 p.m. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway trailhead at Kirk Road, Austintown. Easy rating, 2 or 4 miles.
Aug. 6: Health and wellness walk at 9 a.m. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Moderate difficulty with hills and steps, 3 miles.
Aug. 9: Health and wellness walks at 9 a.m. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway trailhead at MetroParks Farm, Canfield. Easy rating 2 or 4 miles.
Aug. 15: Health and wellness walk at 6 p.m. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Moderate difficulty with hills, 4 miles.
Aug. 23: Health and wellness walks at 9 a.m. Meet at Yellow Creek Park office, Struthers. Moderate difficulty with hills and steps. 1, 2 or 3 miles.
Wednesday: 7 p.m. Frank Castellano Concert (jazz). Judge Morley Pavilion, lawn seating. Free.
Thursday: 10, 10:45 or 11:30 a.m. Two-year-olds will learn about a bee's life through a story, outdoor explorations, and creative role playing games. They will observe a real bee hive. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Preregister by calling FNC.
Aug. 6: Noon-4 p.m. Bug Day devoted to studying insects and their relatives. Play bug games, race wax worms, hunt for bugs, view bugs through microscopes, learn about bees, and more. Event at MetroParks Farm. Call FNC.
Aug. 8: Rocky Chirchiglia Concert, 7 p.m., Yellow Creek Park, Struthers. Lawn seating.
Aug. 8: 5:30-8 p.m. Lynn Cardwell will teach students to emboss clay with leaves and hand craft a vase for fresh flowers. The vase will be glazed, fired, and ready to take home Aug. 29. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register; Fee: $32 ($25 for FFRG members).
Aug. 9: The Fuzz featuring Mike Baranski, Daniel Pecchio, & amp; John Sferra (blues-based rock) Concert, 7 p.m., Judge Morley Pavilion, lawn seating. Free.
Aug. 10, 17 & amp; 24: 10-11 a.m. Family Farm Tours. Reserve your space for a guided tractor-wagon tour by calling the MetroParks Farm. Our barns and the playroom will be open.
Aug. 12: 11 a.m. Learn about the sunflower.
Aug. 13: 1:30-3 p.m. Compost Seminar. Call the Mahoning County Green Team at (330) 740-2060 to preregister for one of two composting sessions.
Aug.13: National Left Hander's Day, 2 p.m. The park will celebrate the day by taking a hike on the "left side" of Lake Cohasset. Afterward Dr. Christopher Niebauer, professor of psychology at Slippery Rock University, will present a program. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Easy rating, 2 miles.
Aug. 13: 1-4 p.m. Children and their families are invited to an afternoon of fun in the Family Garden in Fellows Riverside Gardens. Participants will pot a small plant to take home, make an origami bunny, color with flower petals, count butterflies, listen to stories of Peter Rabbit, sample carrot cake and chamomile tea, and leave handprints on the garden fence.
Aug. 13: 2-3:30 p.m. Guided tour of Fellows Riverside Gardens. Sign in at the information desk on the afternoon of the tour.
Aug.15: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Participants will make a fairy garden container for a sunny window or patio table. Dolly Vivalo will share faerie folklore and help participants create a container. Supplies will be available to make miniature decorative details. We encourage each participant to bring a young partner (ages 8 and up). Fee: $30R, $39NR.
Aug.16: Ovation, (Motown songs and more) Concert at 7 p.m. Judge Morley Pavilion, lawn seating. Free.
Aug. 18: 9 p.m. Two-person after-hours scramble. Eighteen holes. Prizes and refreshments after golf. Registration begins Aug. 4. Call Par 3 Golf Course to register. Fee: $15 per team.
Aug. 19: 8:30-10 a.m. Start your morning with a brisk walk in FRG. Return to the Garden Cafe to enjoy a light breakfast and learn more about the ornamental and flavorful mint family. Call FRG to register. Fee: $6R, $8NR.
Aug. 19: 8 a.m.- noon. Chrysanthemums, asters, and ornamental cabbage and kale can be purchased at this Men's Garden Club sale at FRG. Presale orders must be picked up on this day.
Aug. 20: Bo Wagner's Let's Be Frank with Joe Argiro Orchestra (Sinatra tribute) Concert, 7 p.m. Judge Morley Pavilion, lawn seating. Free.
Aug. 20: 1-4 p.m. Craft Day. Join us for our final summer wagon ride. Make a farm craft to take home.
Aug. 20: 2 p.m. Bring your bike to ride on the MetroParks Bikeway to Kirk Road and back. Helmets are required. Meet at the Bikeway trailhead at the MetroParks Farm, Canfield. Moderate difficulty, 8 miles.
Aug. 23: Santa Fe Concert, 7 p.m. Judge Morley Pavilion, lawn seating. Free.
Aug. 23: Mill Creek Pro-Am. 1 p.m. shotgun start. Mill Creek Golf Course. Northern Ohio PGA Golf Professionals will team up with amateurs for this Best Ball 2-of-4 competition. Lunch will be at noon; cocktails and dinner will be served after golf at the Davis Center. Call the course pro shop to register. Fee: $125.
August 23: 8-11 a.m. Explore summer at FRG through a camera lens with local photographer Patrick Hyland. The workshop is geared for beginner and intermediate students with practical knowledge of either digital or 35mm cameras. A strong emphasis will be placed on composition and the elements of nature. The session will include a lecture, handouts, and photographing opportunities. Call FRG to register. Fee: $20R, session, $26NR, session.
Aug. 25 or 26: Preschool Nature Hour, 10 a.m. Aug. 25 or 12:30 p.m. Aug. 26. Preschoolers ages 3-5 and their parents will enjoy a story, craft, activities and an outdoor walk as they learn about hummingbirds. Preregister at Ford Nature Center. Fee: $2 R, $3 NR.
Aug. 26: 2 p.m. Hopewell Hike. Enjoy a hike to a historic landmark, the Hopewell Furnace. Meet at Yellow Creek Park office, Struthers. Stream crossings may be difficult. 3 miles.
Aug. 26-27: Men's Garden Club Horticulture Show. Public entries must be received by 10:30 a.m. Aug. 26. Call FRG for more information. The show opens noon-5 p.m. Aug. 26 and continues from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Aug. 27. Admire summers' bounty of flowers and vegetables at this show at FRG.
Aug. 27: Noon-2 p.m. Join Julie Thomas in the Tara Dance. Through simple, graceful movements, learn to focus on inner strengths while appreciating the beauty of the surrounding gardens. Call FRG to register. Fee: $10.
Aug. 30: Edison's Medicine ('80s rock) Concert, 7 p.m., Judge Morley Pavilion, lawn seating. Free.
YOGA CLASSES
Tuesday, Aug. 8, 22 & amp; 29: 5:30-7 p.m., and
Thursday, Aug.10, 24 & amp; 31: 8:30-10 a.m., 5:30 to 7 p.m. Yoga at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Reduce stress and relax while learning the basics of energizing yoga movements taught in FRG by Heidi Suraci. Call FRG for information. Fee: $10 per class.
KAYAKING
Kayakers of all skill levels are invited to join escorted trips -- 7-9 p.m. Aug. 9, 1-4 p.m. Aug. 12, 10 a.m.-noon Aug. 16 and 6:30 a.m. Aug. 27 -- through the waters of MetroParks. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Minors 11-15 years old must share a tandem kayak with an adult; 16-17 year olds must be accompanied by an adult. Participants need to complete a waiver. Reservations must be made 36 hours prior to the program. Call Ford Nature Center for details. Fee: $12/personR; $15/ person NR; second person in tandem kayak 1/2 price.
Aug. 9: Not for first-time kayakers. Participants must be at least 18. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.
Aug. 12: Kayakers will paddle up the Mahoning River and explore a tributary named Eagle Creek. Not for first-time kayakers. Participants must be at least 18. Meet at Canoe City Park in Leavittsburg in Trumbull County. Call Ford Nature Center for directions.
Aug. 16: Kayaking at Lake Glacier. Meet at Lake Glacier Boathouse.
Aug. 27: Kayaking at Lake Newport. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.
